I always approach DW short story collections with slight apprehension, fear that everything new and original has already been said and done. But this jaded reader needn't have worried, for this book contains 17 original and highly enjoyable stories to devour.
There's something for everyone with various companions from the likes of Ian and Barbara right through to the present day TARDIS occupants such as Charley and Anji, all vividly and accurately depicted.
The book is a breath of fresh air in an ever increasing marketplace and well worth searching out - excellent stuff!

I've finished reading this collection of short stories.

'Short Trips: Companions' is a fascinating book that I've enjoyed. This collection of stories from Big Finish focuses on the companions featured in 'Doctor Who'. I like 'Doctor Who' companions and its great there's this book about them.

This book contains short stories by various writers compiled by Jacqueline Rayner. I don't usually read 'Doctor Who' short stories or review them. But on this occasion, I hope to pick out the stories I like and dislike in this review as there's something for everyone in this collection.

There are 17 stories in total.

1. THE TIP OF THE MIND
This story is by Peter Anghelides and features the Third Doctor and Zoe. This is set after 'The War Games'. I found this tale a little hard-going as it isn't the most inspired story to start the collection.

The story is the first person by a character called Sandra. I like the touches made to Zoe's character.

2. THE SPLINTERED GATE
This story is by Justin Richards and features Ian and Barbara. It takes place at Coal Hill School and before Ian and Barbara meeting the Doctor and Susan in 'An Unearthly Child'

The story has Ian meeting a Fortune Teller who tells him he's going on a long journey in time and space with a certain woman. This tale is pretty short and ends abruptly left me unsatisfied.

3. THE MAN FROM DOCTO(R)
This story is by Andrew Collins and features Harry. This story takes place after Harry's left the Doctor.

I enjoyed reading this tale and it's a fine story for Harry that portrays the strengths of his character. Harry gets himself caught up in an adventure with a pretty girl and is full of twists and turns.

I have to take my hat off to the 'Short Trips' range, they keep on coming but seem to maintain a ratio of at least 5:1 in favour of good stories. This book is no exception; my least favourite was the one featuring Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright but even that wasn't bad. As long as they keep publishing them and they're at least as good as this I'll keep recommending them.
