5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic, informative book, 17 May 2001
By A Customer
If, like me you are interested in English churches, then this is the ideal companion whether new to the subject or an expert. Almost a dictionary, this book will guide you through all aspects of church architecture, dioceses, history of the parish church, where to go to find information, how to use census records , to name a few.

Excellently written and incredibly informative, a one stop reference to churches

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about the Parish Church, 23 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Companion to the English Parish Church (Sutton History Handbooks) (Paperback)
I'm an avid browser rather than a reader and a lover of churches so this book was almost written for me! A lavishly illustrated book (some plates in colour) about all aspects of the English (and Welsh} parish church: treating the church from the aspect of a place of worship as well as a treasure house of history, architecture and art. Of course it's more than a browsers book - it's an encyclopaedia of everything related (or remotely related)to the parish church - body snatchers, the reformation, heraldry, the clergy, musical instruments, buttresses...these are just headings found by flicking the book open at random. All questions are answered by Stephen Friar and lucidly answered too. If you are even remotely interested in English (or Welsh)churches, local history or the countryside this is an essential book.
