third in the latest series of doctor who audios that are talking books, and feature an actor who played a doctor who companion on tv reprising their role to tell an all new tale. they are talking books that run for roughly seventy minutes, split into two episodes. the format involves the actor reading the story, and there's always one other actor in it with them doing a single speaking part.

this one is the turn of katy manning, to reprise the role of jo grant, whom she played opposite jon pertwee's doctor who in the 1970's. as usual with this series she does very good takes on the voices of the regular actors whom she worked alongside, not out and out impersations but good mimicry.

the story involves jo grant in the present day remembering an adventure that occurred back when she was with the doctor. the discovery of time fluctations leads to the doctor finding an alien artefact in the possession of a man who is loath to give it up. several parties would like it for various reasons, and when the object is used it has a bizarre effect on time. can jo and her friends get things back to normal and help someone get back home?

the script is a splendid recreation of the style of the pertwee era, and katy manning does an excellent reading, clearly enjoying doing it. one continuing minor flaw with this range does rear it's head in that one again the episodes are a bit too long for their own good. this is not really a problem with the thirty two minute long part one, which packs in a lot of good story detail and is very involving with an excellent cliffhanger, but come the forty minutes of part two, which involves some complicated time shenanigans, the pace does drop off a little, and you really will have to work hard as a listener to keep a grip on the story.

but all in all it's a very clever and very good script, and the audio is well worth a listen.

the penultimate track ends with a short trailer for the forthcoming fourth release in this season of companion chronicles, and the final track is a short interview with katy manning and the director of the story. a good and very lively chat, this bit is also well worth a listen
