Book Description

21 Jan 2010 Compact Guides
Part of Lion's Compact Guide series, this handy reference book provides essential information on the growth and impact of Christianity from the apostles to the present day. The encyclopaedia is organized century by century, going through the major events, changes and personalities that have shaped Christian history around the world. It focuses not only on the Western world, but takes a broad survey of global Christianity. (The chapter on 16th century, for example, covers not just the Lutheran reformation but also the shift of power in the Orthodox Church from Constantinople to Rome.) The result is a highly informative, broad-ranging book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic- engaging and very informative! 1 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm new to church history, and I must say this is a perfect introduction. Each chapter covers one century of Christianity, and though it must (by definition) be brief, it is never simplistic. Covering nearly 2,000 years is certainly daunting, but I was happy to see that non-western traditions of Christianity are given their due prominence. The images are beautiful, and the prose very well written. I would recommend this to anyone looking to widen their view of the church- and anyone who wants to read a very engaging history!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good compact history 14 July 2012
By Gra
Format:Paperback
This copiously illustrated guide seeks to cover the history of the church from its origins to the end of the 20th century in just over 200 pages (including an index and a glossary!). It is truly international in its approach and it manages to include an amazing amount of information in a form which is readable and interesting. Inevitably some of the explanations of theological developments are highly compressed and only give a brief glimpse of the issues involved. The discussion of Gnosticism on page 13 is rare example of a definition which is positively misleading and the designation of the pro-orthodox Epistle of Barnabas as Gnostic is bizarre. However, these are minor blemishes and , taken as a whole, this is fascinating and stimulating taster of what Christian history has to offer.
