2.0 out of 5 stars Embarrasingly created book! 14 April 2011
I bought this book to aid my studies but relied also on other books by Mike Meyers and 2 video training courses. This Comptia Network + Book by Todd Lammle is very badly put together; there's a plethora of spelling errors, mis-types and even in the included disc, there's several errors in the questions and answers and these range from spelling errors to actual wrong answers. Luckily the Sybex website offers readers the chance to post up these errors so they are documented on the website and the intention here is to correct these multitude of errors by next edition.
To give you an example of an error in the book, the term 1000BaseT is stated as being "multi mode"(this error is on a chart showing this and other cable types in the book). Anyone who is studying the comptia (whether A+ or Network+) or knows about networking will know automatically this is completely wrong as 1000BaseT refers to 1000Mb/ps or 1Gb/ps over twisted pair copper NOT fiber (which is what the author has accidently written)
A very poor offering from sybex especially as it costs a lot. I do have the Sybex A+ book also and again this is also full of errors. In the end i ditched the sybex books and stuck with Mike Meyers and cbt video training.
I will however state that on a positive, the Comptia Network + by Lammle does have one excellent resource and this is his explanation of subnetting and how to do the calculations. This section is absolutely brilliant in explaining it but in my opinion is the only good feature of the book.I can't believe an editor would release such a book with so many errors, but then again i can as sybex have a history of doing this and then charging readers extortinate amounts of money for the priviledge.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners 13 Nov 2010
I've been studying this book as part of a university couse. It is very badly written and if you are a beginner, keep well clear of this book.
The author keeps referring to terms he hasn't defined in order to explain something. There are notes saying that the undefined entities will be explained later in the book, and they are - but these definitions suffer from the same problem.
The book is poorly structured and very difficult to read. If you already know the basics and fully understand topics such as subnetting then you should be ok, but otherwise dont read this book until you have a firm grounding in the subject.
On the plus side, the technical detail is second to none - but if you already know enough to understand the book; why bother with it?
