Very well written 13 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
I had previously borrowed a friends course materials for this exam and was struggling a little. I decided I would take a chance and buy this book to see if it made things any easier. I am happy to say it did.

The book is extremely well written, it manages to maintain a narrative throughout the book whilst getting across all the important technical information you need. I cannot recommend it enough.

Good Book 17 May 2010
By Bazoo
Format:Hardcover
I used this book to study for my Network+ exam and passed with a top score. It is a very easy book to read and the layout is very, very good. Mike gradually introduces the more advanced concepts and the first few chapters were a breeze to get through. He has a way to make you remember things like 568A/568B wiring standard and the OSI layer model. One thing I would say though is that through out the book there are little "Exam Tips!". Take these with a grain of salt because on at least one occasion he would tell you that something would not be tested in detail on the exam which I later found out was not true. CompTIA does say the exam changes from time to time so just try to learn everything that is in the book and not ignore parts of it just because Mike says it's not on the exam.

I give this book 4/5 because the subnetting section was incredibly weak and it's by far one of the most advanced topics. However don't let that put you off. The book is very good and will help you pass your exam and make you have fun doing so!

I've just passed the CompTIA Network+ exam, literally 4 hours ago, after using this book as (just about) an exclusive study guide (backup from Mr. Google).

The style of the writing is excellent: conversational but somehow packed with information. There's also a goodly amount of historical background to the technology, which is (relatively) interesting, but also clearly marked should you wish to skip it.

I've no real-world networking experience but have been in IT software consultancy for 10+ years. Apart from sections on cabling, advanced networking devices and network management I had a high-level understanding of the material - but the book definitely filled in some large knowledge-gaps. I was a little nervous about taking the exam without the recommended 9 months network support/admin experience but, as long as you've read the book thoroughly and have reasonable analytical skills, you'll get through with some points to spare.

I also used several "test exam" type pieces of software (a limited example [50 questions] is included on the book's DVD) to get a feel for the actual CompTIA questions. The questions that come with the book are good - but only 50 questions didn't give me enough confidence. I'd recommend getting some more somehow.

I scored 844 out of 900 (pass mark: 720) over 100 questions. There were definitely a couple of questions that I don't recall being covered by the book; one in particular regarding connecting networks of varying topologies. However, for the vast majority of questions, it was dead-on.

My one real gripe is the quantity of errors in the book and that they are almost all misleading in some sense e.g.

Page 510 Says that the 802.11 wireless standard maximum speed is 2Mbps with a maximum range of approximately 150ft , but the summary table on page 513 says it has a maximum speed of 11Mbps and a maximum range of approximately 300ft.

This is the one example I remember - but there are (quite a few) others. I would've preferred a load of spelling errors (didn't see one!) to contradictory factual data.

In the final analysis, I read the book cover-to-cover twice in 3 weeks, created mind-map revision documents as I read, immediately took the exam and passed. What more can you ask for from this type of book?
