4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer in community planning., 13 Feb 2002
Nick Wates provides a practical primer in community planning with lots of examples which will be suitable for professionals and interested individuals in both the developing and developed world.

Above all this book provides an extremely useful and practical introduction to community planning.

By starting with first principles the book sets out a very clear framework with which individuals and communities can approach challenges and opportunities in their urban environments.

Building on community planning principles the book looks at methods and scenarios which help crystallize often abstract debates associated with planning.

The book then goes on to provide examples of community planning methods and scenarios which further enhance the book's usefulness as both a primer and inspiration for people interested in getting into community planning.

I found the book particularly interesting in providing examples from developing country settings where the planning issues are often very different from those encountered in an urbanized and developed country, which is of course where most community planning books are set.

Well worth buying if you want an excellent introduction and real life examples with which you can inform your own involvement in community planning.
