This is the third of the four volumes issued in respect of an Open University course. You do not need to have undertaken the course to benefit from this book's contents. I did not do the course.

There are eleven contributors to this volume, which comprises ten chapters spread through four parts. Some of the contributors have already been met with by the reader in volumes one and two; some are new. There are forty-six figures and forty-nine tables. Whereas volume one in this series had a primarily genealogical flavour, and volume two was geared more to historical geography, this volume is certainly in the realm of the sociologist, and even the political scientist.

As with the first two volumes in the series, the book's preface re-iterates its focus on nineteenth- and twentieth-century British Isles, as well as its determination to inspire and assist actual research projects. It is important to stress that this book was published in 1994, with the result that there are no references to the internet or many at all to spreadsheets. Consequently, some of the suggestions for research that are discouraged because they are time-consuming are no longer valid.

This volume is centred on "family- or community-based activities that can be studied at a small-scale level such as work, social mobility, local politics, religion, or leisure." The ensuing introduction goes on to state that, "much of this volume is devoted to examining the kinds of activities and organizations that were and are available to families in various localities and to investigating what part, if any, these activities play in linking families to communities.
