Amazon.co.uk Review
When Whitley Strieber's bestselling book Communion--quickly followed by this film adaptation--posited the notion of alien abduction, it did so to an eager audience who had yet to be bombarded with similar scenarios by The X-Files. Although somewhat eccentric in his general behaviour already, "Whit" (Christopher Walken) becomes ever stranger as he is gripped by increasing paranoia. One night at his family's country cabin he was unaccountably "visited". It's hard not to be as confused and frightened as he is when viewing the apparent corroborating evidence: recurring dreams, fleeting images, shadowy masked faces, vague comments from his young son and the occasional splitting headache. One of the strong points of Strieber's tale has always been the trepidation with which he approached it. The doctor's appointments and plucking up the courage to be hypnotised all offer a genuine reaction to inexplicable circumstance, and this is aided enormously by one of Walken's most mesmerising performances. He's well supported by Lindsay Crouse as his wife, Joel Carson as a thankfully believable yet cute son and an ambiguous musical theme from Eric Clapton.

On the DVD: Given that a Region 1 Special Edition exists, this is a disappointing bare-bones DVD transfer. The picture is in full-screen 4:3 and the sound in Dolby 2.0 Stereo. The only extras are a few pages of filmography for director Philippe Mora, Christopher Walken, Lindsay Crouse and Frances Sternhagen. --Paul Tonks

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, yet flimsy E.T. encounter chronicals., 1 Sep 2001
By A Customer
A hokey, overtly serious adaptation of Whitley Strieber's alien abduction reminisces. A typically stone-faced Christopher Walken lifts the proceedings from its B-Grade roots with a suitably bemused and moody portrayl, giving some creedence to the dubious proceedings. If you have seen "Fire In The Sky" you will know what to expect...Lot's of unexplained flashing lights, aliens with ambiguous intentions and lashings of doubting expressions from the supporting cast. Despite this, the film is redeemed by a few genuine chills in the X-Files mould, and worth the wait for the E.T. appearances, only if you are prepared to wade through the swamp of "real-life" intimate family break-down drama.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great film, 28 May 2004
This is a great movie that deserves alot more attention. There are some funny elements in place as well. This is a great movie if you like UFO's. It may be a little slow for some people but the plot should keep you interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, I loved the donkey honking scene., 24 Jul 2000

This review is from: Communion [VHS] [1989] (VHS Tape)
This is a nifty film and it is a good one for the kids if you like watermelon, Todd Weaton, Alex Vitte, Jack Hurley and all of that are all gay. My mum likes donkeytronics.

Here is something i saw written on a ruler:

Jackson Twight was here at this very second of this very minute of exact day of this exact year. I like to eat porridge for breakfast and for a little snack at any time of the day, overall i think your cousin is a great person.

Fine performance by Christopher Walken - Abduction scenes were quite trippy. Well worth purchasing for alien/ufo enthusiasts.

I read the book and was looking forward to the film. I should not have bothered - the relationship between this film and Streiber's book is absolutly coincidental. Read more
