Book Description

20 Feb 2012 1444335677 978-1444335675 3rd Edition
Health protection professionals need rapid access to authoritative and easy–to–use information to ensure their actions are based on international best practice. This is precisely what the Communicable Disease Control and Health Protection Handbook does. This concise and practical handbook is an essential guide for all those who have responsibility for the identification and control of infectious disease.  In the past five years, there have been many major changes in health protection practice, and significant scientific progress in the field, all of which are reflected in this new edition of the popular Communicable Disease Control and Health Protection Handbook . All chapters have been updated in line with recent changes in epidemiology, new guidelines for control and administrative changes. Basic principles of communicable disease control and health protection, major syndromes, control of individual infections, main services and activities, organizational arrangements for all EU countries and sources of further information are covered. A new chapter on pandemic planning has been included, and the influenza chapter has been expanded to cover seasonal, avian and pandemic flu.  Communicable Disease Control and Health Protection Handbook is an indispensible companion for all those who are engaged in health protection, including public health physicians, epidemiologists, infection control nurses, microbiologists and trainees in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for health protection on-calls 21 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is highly recommended for those involved in health protection on-call work. It gives both background and very simple, practical management advice for hundreds of communicable diseases - anything and everything that's likely to come up. The management is even split into describing what's is required out-of-hours, and what can be left to the following day. It is comprehensive and excellent - a real health protection equivalent of the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine (Oxford Medical Handbooks) loved by hospital physicians.

The Kindle edition offers simple navigation via the hyperlinked contents pages, plus a greater level of easy portability than the paperback edition (Communicable Disease Control and Health Protection Handbook). There's also the benefit of being able to search the text, which I've previously found beneficial. Otherwise, the contents of the paperback and Kindle editions are identical, and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential 16 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An essential resource for public health specialty registrars studying for MFPH Part A andB exams, preparing to undertake supervised on-call duties and for later refresher training. The new edition brings the curent guidance as up to date as it can, given that HPA guidelines for each disease/infection are updated on a staggered rolling programme. The recent healthcare reforms in England resulting from the Health & Social Care Act 2012 mean than a number of structures and processes will need to be updated again in the near future. The most recent Kindle edition has a number of technical improvements, including better indexing and layout, which make reading and referencing a lot easier.
