For those who don't want to splash out on a Galaxy Tab, this seems to be the next best thing for the price. True, you do get what you pay for, but for example, the lack of Flash is not a big deal since my phone is an iPhone. iPlayer would have been nice, but with no HDMI out am not really bothered.
The 4GB Micro SD card that comes free with it is nice, but I've replaced with a 32GB giving it a tidy spec.
Every app I've downloaded from the Android Market has worked flawlessly and battery life seems pretty good too, especially with a nice 800x480 screen under the capacitive glass screen. The black shiny plastic and aluminium effect material are nice and the case is actually surprisingly good for faux leather.
It has attracted quite a lot of attention in the office and already have a buyer lined up when I upgrade later in the year; such has been the response from people wandering over to my desk and playing with the device.
Have added a Vodafone PAYG SIM with voice, SMS and data - again all works flawlessly and no manual configuration needed. Otherwise Wifi reception is good, works happily with a 3 MiFi unit and SIM stuff all works as it should. Bluetooth, GPS and wired connectivity is all very good too.
If you want to get on the bandwagon without splashing too much cash go for this 80% tablet / 20% oversized phone :)

This was my second attempt at an Android tab.
First was a cheap wifi only no-name device from a local high-street retailer, it had resistive screen and Android 1.6. Was too slow and touch screen was useless.

The Commtiva N700 overcame all these issues and worked well. Fast enough for normal use, though unfortunately doesn't support Adobe Flash and BBC iPlayer. All other apps seemed to work well. Camera's are both adequate, sound is OK and both 3g and wifi easy to set up. Screen quality good enough for size of device. Battery life adequate for a day's use, like any other smartphone. Android Market is easy to use. Having case and 4GB SD card added in the pack is a bonus.

Unfortunately my device had a h/w problem and kept rebooting in "sleep" mode and I've had to return it. Other users reported they don't have this issue.

Waiting for new machine....

I'm going to keep this quite short and to the point as it's my first review. I'd just like to say that I'm no expert, just an ordinary guy wanting to share my own opinion of this gadget.

I'll start by saying that one of the reasons for opting for this and not the iPad is that I preferred the compact size. Contrary to what Steve Jobs thinks, not everyone finds the large format of the iPad ideal. I may like apple products, but I'm certainly not one of these people who will buy anything and everything just because it is designed by Apple.

I have said in the title that this is a gem in your hands, and I really mean it. To all intents and purposes this is a large iphone4 in shape and look. The main differences being that this runs on Android 2.2 and is made mainly from plastic (except for the screen which is glass). The technical detail of this tablet describes it as having a "compact slim aluminium case". This is actually misleading as the aluminium band around the edge of the tablet is actually plastic. At first I thought, "I've been done", and "they can be taken to court for breach of Trade Description". However, on reflection it is probably better that it's plastic, otherwise Commtiva could have had the same problems as Apple had with the iphone4, with regard to the bad signal caused by their aluminium band.
My only other gripe with Commtiva, while on the subject of materials, is that the "stylish leather pouch" is also not actually leather. It's is some other unidentifiable material, probably plastic which has been pressed to make it look like leather (albeit very badly).
Apart from this, it has a glass screen and a high gloss, black, plastic back. It's really very nice indeed and feels good in your hand.

In the description is carefully avoided any mention to the speed of the processor (also in the official web of the product). It is a meager 600 MHz, and you'll have no Flash (no matter if it where upgradeable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread). You should know this before buying it. It is clearly specified in the website of the Viewsonic Viewpad 7, which comes to be exactly the same than this Commtiva FM6 (and also Commtiva N700) but more pricey.
In the model I tested, the screen was responsive, but pinch and zoom didn't work. Check this before buying (I don't know if it was a defect of the unit, or a lacking feature ?).
This said, the tablet is one of the few having a GPS and SIM card module.
For the price, it's an incredible value product, but you must know what the limitations are.
I would be more than happy paying some more bulks for a 1 MHz processor.

Verified Purchase
Charging socket on the device is not sufficiently robust and fails eventually. I contacted the manufacturers and was told 'we are no longer making this'.... telling me in effect not to bother them. It was not reparable either.
