Product Description

Commonweal is the oldest independent lay Catholic journal of opinion in the United States. It has been called by one prominent U.S. church historian "the American Catholic laity's most ambitious undertaking, and still the most successful one." At a time when many are seeking models for how the laity can claim its rightful place within the institutional church, and for how faith can illuminate and influence the secular world, Commonweal's mission seems more critical than ever.

Founded in 1924, Commonweal reflected a growing sense of self-confidence among American Catholics as they emerged from immigrant status to become members of the American mainstream. Free of any ecclesiastical control or agenda, Commonweal still strives to be a truly independent voice, faithful to the great Catholic tradition but always questioning the unexamined assumptions of church and society alike. Its readership includes many of the church's most influential leaders, both inside and outside the hierarchy, as well as political figures, academics, and educated laypeople who are as passionate about their faith as they are committed to critical thinking and analysis.

Commonweal's contributors include many of the Catholic world's most prominent thinkers and engaging writers, and its editorials offer timely views on the church, politics and culture that can surprise and frustrate both liberals and conservatives. Its book, film, and other reviews often identify voices unnoticed or underrated by the mainstream secular or religious media. The magazine is published 22 times a year, including special annual issues on theology, ecumenism, books and fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars This magazine deserves five stars, but... 30 Dec. 2011

I have been a subscriber of this magazine for several years. I am very happy it finally made it to the electronic version. The only think I don't like is the fact that I can not read the past issue. When I bought the subscription, I immediately got my issue delivered to my Kindle Fire... I was half way into reading it and the past issue disappeared and the new issue appeared. I want to be able to at least finish the past issue before jumping into the next one... otherwise, this is one of the best magazines ever, and the format for Kindle is fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Generally one of the better Kindle formatted magazines 10 Jan. 2013

Kindle Commonweal has the fine content print readers love and is also one of the more successful Kindle migrations.

The earlier reviewer needs to read his Kindle User Manual. Past issues of Kindle Periodicals remain on the Kindle for several issues in a special folder (look for it at the end of the list of collections next to the Archived List folder.) You can also use the menu to choose to keep an issue and it will stay on your kindle until you unkeep or delete it.

Also the recent Jan 11 issue was missing the cover article. Notified of the problem the publisher has fixed it and the correction can be obtained by deleting the bad issue and downloading it again from your archive.

The publishers quick response was refreshing. I have had others kiss off my complaints by passing the buck to amazon. Many apparently do not subscribe to their own Kindle editions to see what their publication actually looks like on Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great magazine 28 May 2014

The ultimate magazine for thoughtful commentary. I've been a subscriber for many, many years and thought I'd try the kindle edition. I love it -- and the fact that I can easily keep back issues for future reference.
5.0 out of 5 stars Always challenging and entertaining 2 Mar. 2014

This 125 year old lay run magazine features some of the best journalism around on arts, culture, literature and "The Church (Roamn catholic)" with spiritual writings plus news of the institutional church and its joys , sorrows and humiliations. Wonderful to look forward to each week and I miss it when they take time off during the summer. I find myself buying and reading so many of the books they review in literature politics, history. Also up todate analysis of important information.
4.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent views 9 Jan. 2014

Commonweal gives you the opportunity to read intelligent reports and opinions instead of the normal soundbite television and radio news.
