I have found this book very useful in identifying mammal names that I have previously found only in Latin. For example, if one wanted to know what the common name given to the squirrel, Petaurista nobilis, is, simply look the name up in the index in the back of the book, or if you are a taxonomist, you can look it up in taxonomical order, in the order Rodentia, family Sciuridae. It will then tell you the common name is the Bhutan giant flying squirrel. The authors Don E. Wilson and F. Russell Cole, have made up certain common names, such as this squirrel, if no suitable sources have been found which give a name to the species. A list of sources is at the back and an introduction including history and rationale, principles used in selecting common names, geographic distribution, how to use the book and acknowledgements are included before the main text. Also beside each scientific name is an abbreviation of which zoogeographical realm it is native to. This helps in identification of common names.
Hope this helps you in deciding whether to buy this book.
