The complete first series of the BAFTA-nominated sitcom following a six-man crew of rubbish collectors who display unusual commitment to their job. Nev (Edward Woodward) leads a crew that contains men of numerous backgrounds and outlooks. Though personalities sometimes clash and the trials and tribulations of life test friendships, the crew are united by a desire to do their job well and buoyed by a sense of camaraderie. However, with new management in place and privatisation encroaching on the traditions of the job, the men will have to be more united than ever if they are to continue to enjoy their work...

Its been a long time coming but William Ivory's classic 90's series has finally arrived. Inspired by his own experiences working on the bins in Nottinghamshire this series is full of heart, some great characters and it has been a total joy to watch again. Why has it taken twenty years to come out on DVD? I hope I don't have to wait another two decades for the second series! Everything about this six part series is excellent, from Ivory's gritty stories and bitter-sweet dialogue to some great acting. Neil Dudgeon, Tim Healy, Stephen Lord, Anthony Barclay, in fact all the cast are brilliant, but for me Richard Ridings as Bernard and Edward Woodward will always stand out. If you loved this series the first time around I don't think you will be disappointed seeing it now. I loved every minute.

This series is pure brilliance. I can't add any more to the other reviews other than to say that if you like well written, impeccably acted and hard hitting drama which defines the 1970s and 80s then look no further. An absolute masterpiece and well worth the asking price.

I am seriously hoping that my memories of this tough, touching, funny and brilliantly acted comedy-drama are not cheating me - I have waited a very long time for this show to be released on DVD. I remember watching it in the 90s and finding it both hilarious and genuinely affecting - particularly Edward Woodward's brilliant performance as Ned in the second series. Probably the last great performance of this fine and too often under-rated actor. Can't wait for this to be released!

OMG I have waited 20 years for this to be released. Why so long? Brings back a lot of memories. Why has this not been upscaled to blu ray quality either? The DVD is grainy. This is my favourite series of all time. Hurry up series 2. R.I.P the great Edward Woodward. the world is a sadder place without you.

Watched this program during my college years twenty years ago and have always wished for a series repeat or DVD release. Well now it's finally here so was it as good as I remembered? Yes, absolutely fantastic. It took me right back to the early/mid 90's, my halcyon days!
Edward Woodward is fantastic as Nev, the respected elder statesman of super crew. Richard Ridings puts in one hell of a shift as the mentally under developed Bernard. Tim Healy is also on top form as the Ferret fancying Foxy! All the cast are magic in fact. Everyone's favourite bin men having a ball on the highways of England's north west face the still prevalent working class challenge of having to do more work in the same or less number of hours each week for less pay in increasingly difficult personal and professional circumstances. Camaraderie and good humour keeps them going as the threat of public service privatisation looms large and eventually becomes reality.
Every bit as wonderful as I remember.
Buy it, love it and then pray for the release of the second and final series!
