Not really a review more of a caveat emptor ....

Please note the the single disc edition of this film is only a 4:3 print.

If you want a 16:9 version you need to either get the two disc special edition or the dual pack with The Van (which is £1 more).

"The Commitment" is a exceptional and humourous story about real people in Dublin, Ireland. It is written by Roddy Doyle and centers around a young man and the band he is trying to put together to play soul music. His point is that "The Irish brothers wouldn't be shooting ...each other if they had soul". But keeping the band together turns out to be just as big a problem as it was putting it together in the first place...
The casting for the film took place in Dublin where virtually everybody showed up (says Sharon Corr), so the actors are real dubliners, and they do a fantastic job. They were all unknown when the film was made, but some has made it big on the music scene since (Andrew Strong, Andrea Corr).
Bit perhaps the biggest part in the film is played by the soundtrack. Old classics are given a makeover and are performed brilliantly by the band in the film.
This is a film and a soundtrack that belongs on everyones shelf.

Everyone should watch this film at least once in their lifetime. Follow the progress of a "thrown together" band. Share their individual trials and tribulations and enjoy their ultimate emergence as a successful band.
The characters are gutsy, funny and true to life. Whether you're into the music style or not, makes no difference. These guys are good musicians and belt it out! Final result: a lively, poignant lesson on fighting to achieve your dream. Brilliant excuse for a night in, beer or not!

This is close to being my favourite film of all time, whenever I feel a bit low I put it back on and cheer myself up. The characters are brilliant, the music is wonderful, and it's absolutely hilarious. Quite why Andrew Strong never made it as a successful singer I'll never know. Why is it when the Irish F and Blind you can't help but laugh.

i'm currently returning it as it has spanish writing on the front. it's sealed so i can't check whether it would actually be in english, but It's for my daughter and would just confuse her! it wasn't clear this would be the case from the details. thanks

This is very crafty ! The main picture of the DVD cover is in English,
which leads you to believe that this is the English version of the DVD- but it isn't !
This is a French DVD, and the cover you receive is in French- not the cover in the picture !
If you go back and look at the other pictures in the listing, you will see (if you look closely) that the second picture is a blurry shot of the back cover in French.
I think that this is designed to deliberately mislead you into thinking that you are ordering an English DVD.
Now, it does say that DVD is in French, English and Italian and that there are subtitles in French, English, Italian and Dutch.
But it comes with a sticker on the back that says "No Return if seal is broken" so you don't really know what you are getting.
Do you send it back, or open it and see what you get ?
Well, if you decide to open it up, you'll find that it defaults to French as the spoken language, and you have to change it to English through the menu. After that, it seems fine- original dialogue, in English.
So- just be warned, and make sure that you know what you are getting, or you might get a surprise when you open the envelope !

despite being advertised as the English version, the film itself is a french language film, with english as an audio option. Not what i wanted

First let me say that the DVD itself is fine. Having seen the film before I knew exactly what I was getting and in that respect it delivered. However, the printed sleeve was in French and the DVD case was so brittle it split and broke apart on first opening. Seemed like it was very old stock which didn't sell in France. The French sleeve was not mentioned on the website and the brittle case was either very poor quality or had been sitting in storage for years.
