Biography

Tunng: always different, always the same. The band we meet, gathered in a cosy room in a Dutch barge on the Thames, are here to talk about a record that is dramatically different to any of their previous three. It's got a new lyricist and a new lead vocalist. It's got drums. It's got synthesizers. It's got massed singalong choruses. It's got guitar solos. And rather ... Read more in Amazon's Tunng Store

Product Description

Product Description

Highly anticipated second album from this experimental folk electronica (folktronica?) outfit. Features the critically praised single "Woodcat", which combines Simon & Garfunkel-esque harmonies with stuttering electronics and an obsession with British cult film "The Wicker Man". And there's a lot more where that came from!

5.0 out of 5 stars intelligent music 14 Jun 2006
Format:Audio CD
I am always on the look out for music that is clever, that pushes the boundaries of conventional intrumentalism and that is unique in its form. I bought this on a whim having read a good review and I am really glad I did. The Beta Band are my all time fave and even though King Biscuit Time are great I need something to fall back on, something to tell me that there are always people with vision out there that can create beautiful music without compromise. There is definite elements of the Beta Band here with its weird random sound inclusions, also there are hints of Lemon Jelly with the sampling of tracks from old 1950s radio/films. Yet the thread that keeps it together is a wistful, ebb and flow of feel good folk lyrics and gentle sweeping guitar. Other sounds in the melting pot are perhaps a touch of Kings of Convenience and Belle and Sebastian but Tunng are more complex overall..But then credit to them they are thankfully really just out on thier own... this is truly beautiful, intelligent music...go buy it, as I am going to buy everything else they have done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quirky piece of excellence 27 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
I bought this having read a newspaper review and not having either heard of this band before or heard any of their music. On first play I was hooked. Musically this album is superb. beeutiful melodies inhabit this piece throughout and in each case the music is accompanied by fantastic mellow vocals. The background bits of spoken voice and weird noises perfectly accompany the melodies and give the album a weird and sometimes quite sinister feel. The review that i read described this a bit Wicker Man-ish and I can see where they are coming from. I highly recommnend this one. Buy it! (9/10)

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing 13 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
How does a band as good as this remain underneath the radar of the masses? One can only conclude that the mere mention of the word 'folk' terrifies the average man in the street.

Tunng are so much more than "the new vanguard of folk", or any other label that reviewers may wish to put on them. Pop, psychadelia, electronica - it's all here and done with such a deft touch.

What makes this band so special is the playful element to much of their work; it's like The Whicker Man soundtrack updated for a new generation of home computer fans.

Truly impressive stuff. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It might be twisted folk, but I like it 9 Nov 2006
Format:Audio CD
Fantastic stuff - traditional instruments overlaid with the beeps, whistles and clicks of stop-start electronica and samples. The end result is a sort of combination of Thom Yorke's The Eraser and the Wicker Man soundtrack (and yes that is a good thing). There is also something of Syd Barrett in the some of the lyrics and vocals. The end result, though, is genuinely innovative and although lumped in with the strange/acid/twisted folk crowd, Tunng are actually moving more in the direction of, say Four Tet, and challenging our expectations of what "folk" music might be. Probably not what Ewan MacColl had in mind for folk, but the wizened fans bands like the Incredible String Band might find something to love here along with Espers fans. Anyway, you might not get it first time round, but all will become clear with persistent listens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible String Band for the 21st century 23 Jun 2008
By Arthur Dooley VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I'm not sure if Mike Harding ever plays Tunng on his BBC Folk on 2 programme...I've never heard them on the show. However, this quirky band are very much in the Nu-Folk tradition. Offering beautiful atmpospheric acoustic pieces springing like a startled hare from an electronic cage.
Just as their 60's Folk soul mates, The Incredible sting band came across as mad musical jesters, Tunng have the advantage of having a battery of electronic wizardry at their disposal and are not afraid to engage in hi tech tomfoolery in addition to their more traditional musicianship.
I can understand if Tunng's music goes over the heads of those listeners who come from safer, more radio friendly musical backgrounds.
For me though, Tunng are one of my best discoveries of 2008. If you listen to a lot of music and consider yourself as having a sophisticated musical palate then Tunng will prove a tonic I'm sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Folktronica at it's best! 16 Dec 2013
Format:Audio CD
A 5 star album! Forget reading any of those reviews that gave this album anything less than 4-5 stars. This is Folktronica Pop at it's best, musically & lyrically quirky, surreal and strange. A great album and a must have along with 'Good Arrows' and 'Mother's Daughter'.
A trio of albums that make you want more!
Check out 'Jenny Again' video on youtube for an addictive & beautiful song about love & murder...
