Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines places you in the command of one to six soldiers (known as, naturally, the Commandos), all with their own sets of skills, strengths and weaknesses. The game throws a monkey wrench into standard real-time strategy conventions by eschewing such typical features as resource accumulation and unit creation. Pyro Studios and Eidos Interactive, in changing the way real-time strategy games are played, have moulded Commandos: BEL into a far more tactical and strategic game than its competitors in the genre.

Featuring 24 World War II-based missions, which take place in a variety of locations--including deserts, dams and snow-covered terrain--Commandos: BEL offers a wide variety of mission objectives, with gameplay emphasising the dynamics between the six commandos. For instance, Tread's skills lie in driving, Spooky carries disguises and spy equipment for infiltration missions and Fins works best in the comfort of water.

Stealth techniques dominate most missions; a handy line-of-sight display confirms whether your commandos are hidden from view. In some missions, alerting enemy guards could prove costly. In others, though, offensive tactics provide the greatest--and easiest--success. The diverse strategies employed in Commandos: BEL create a unique and rewarding gaming experience.--Doug Radcliffe

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as ever!, 22 Oct 2001
This review is from: Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines (DVD Packaging) (Video Game)
When I first got this game about 2 and a half years ago I couldn't stop playing on it. I completed it and lately was thinking of buying Commandos 2. However, I don't have any money so I went back to the original. I thought I would get very bored with it, but it might keep me going. How wrong I was. As it happens, I forgot almost all of the tactics I used, and I've actually completed the game an almost entirely different way and it's still challenging! If you like cerebral games, this gem will keep you going for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars One hell of a game, 8 Feb 2012

This review is from: Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines (DVD Packaging) (Video Game)
Bear in mind before buying this title: it is really a hard game, and not a game for everyone. If you are serious about RTS, and are looking for a challenge, then you should definetely give it a try because it is well worth it. It's a cult game.
This game is pretty old, so it has dated graphics (but still very appreciable) and a limited number of features compared to more modern games of the same genre, but the contents and the mechanics are solid.
Be prepared to think every move your men will make, take your time to decide, but once the action starts you'll have to be quick about your business. This is meant to be a stealth game for the most part, so you'll have to complete the mission objectives with a great deal of perfection.
The campaign and the setting very enjoyable, and the enemy AI is still respectable, and it was superb when the game was first released.

It will take a lot of patience and a LOT more saves to finish the game, but the satisfaction, at least for me, has been great.
Recommended to nostalgic strategic players looking for yet one more challenge.
NOT recommended to casual players.

5.0 out of 5 stars commandos: behind enemy lines, 25 Jan 2010
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines (DVD Packaging) (Video Game)
A very original game that requires a lot of puzzle solving and patience. In this game you are given a variety of tasks to complete such as disabling an enemy radio tower or destroying an electro-dam. The only problem is that standing in between you and your task is usually an army of Nazi's.

In order to overcome this Nazi menace you have at your disposal a variety of characters each with their own abilities. For example you may use the spy character to distract an enemy whilst your generic tough guy character sneaks up behind him and silent slits his throat. Or you may use the sniper character to try and take out enemies from a distance clearing the way for your sapper to go in and set up some explosive charges.

This game is all about subtlety and cunning, players who decide to use the "shoot anything that moves as soon as it moves until it stops moving" method of gaming will soon find out that they have set off alarms all over the mission level and will soon be surrounded by swarms of angry Nazi's

This game comes fully recommended if you are the sort of person who likes stealth in games and can often see several ways of solving certain problems.
