5.0 out of 5 stars Written as it really was.. 2 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Their are many books available about military service but few reveal the detail and day to day life a serviceman has to go through as in Commando : A Marines Story.
Interestingly Geoff Nordass career closely matches my own from the 1970s through to the 1990s I too attended Commando training Centre not as a "Royal" but as a "Pongo" on the tough All Arms Commando course in 1985.I also served many years in Northern Ireland as well.. The commandos were always in the thick of it. I also worked for a short time as a bodyguard to a well known Egyptian shop owner. So I know what he writing about is true and not at all embellished, unlike some of the well known Special forces author's who "Bloat" the story line to make it a exciting story.. All in all the narrative is very honest, descriptive and well researched. I particularly enjoyed the real sense of "Being there" and the less exciting side of service life, the daily grind of guard duties and b#llshit. A very enjoyable and gritty story.

Great to read something that is not sensationalised and true to the facts. Geoff has obviously been there and done that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 28 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this book whilst I was away on holiday and couldn't put it down. I can highly recommend it. It's a heart felt read unlike many of the other books which tend to be me me me!!!. I was only a young boy when the Falklands happened and to me the guys who went are all Heroes. I look forward to more books by Geoff I hope they come out soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and superbly written! 11 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Unfortunately, this book was so good that it took me next to no time at all to read it! Geoff has led an unreal and interesting life, I really am rather jealous of him. Despite my background and heritage, I really did underestimate the significance and sheer amount of bloodshed that occurred (and to a degree occasionally still does) In Northern Ireland and so have made it a priority of mine to read up on it. Thanks also for the recommendation of O'Keefe's book, read only the sample so far and am already hooked; it is brought closer to home when I realise that he lives a fair short car journey from my home located in the neighbouring county to his.

5.0 out of 5 stars commando - A Royal Marine's Story 20 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback
I like a good book and this has it all. From the first page to the end it was gripping. I let my teenage son read this one - I feel it's good for youngsters to know just what our soldiers go through.
Mr Nordass has endured so much and thank goodness he's written this book of endurance, bravery and sheer guts. Brilliant read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page turner 28 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Whilst this is not usually my genre of book, it shows its merit in so far as I just couldn't put it down! Therefore I can recommend it as not just a restricted read to those who wish to know about life in and out of the Marines, but to a wider audience too. Deserves to be on your Must Read list. I found it excellent.
