More About the Author

I've been a Commando, a PCSO in the Met and a security guard at the UK Mission to the UN in New York, but it was the terrifying experience of bringing my first son back from the hospital that prompted me to write Commando Dad: Basic Training. Based on the 'Basic Battle Skills' that I was given when I joined the army, Basic Training is packed with practical tips and advice, and equips men with all the skills they need to be hands-on-dads. It is supported by my website:, that not only has extra resources (such as videos about how to hold, feed, burp, change and bath your baby troopers) but also forums where dads can share tips and advice with me - and other Commando Dads. It is now also available as a pocket book version (the first year).

I have now written a new book to prepare men for fatherhood: Commando Dad Raw Recruits. It uses the 266 days (and counting) that separate men from dads, to prepare them - practically, physically and where possible, emotionally - for the adventure ahead. It covers everything from the physical and emotional development of your BT (Baby Trooper) and CO (Commanding Officer or mum-to-be); to pregnancy symptoms you don't need to worry about (and those you do); what happens in the appointments; ante natal classes; what childbirth is actually like and what happens next; and much more. It also features advice and tips from other new dads.

I have written the two books that I wish I'd have been given as a dad-to-be and a new dad.

After 12 years as a stay at home dad to my three troopers, Sam, Jude and Liberty, I'm still learning new things about parenting. You can reach me on the forums on my website, and also read about my adventures in parenting in Telegraph Men:

5.0 out of 5 stars The Right Tool for the Job 19 Aug. 2012
By Weeg
This book is straight forward and written using down to earth words not long unpronounceable ones. After reading other books this is by far the best. As a serving soldier I found this book amusing as well and greatly detailed. With the army style instruction and links to video on the website any man will find what he needs. If I was to sum this book up in one word it's MEGA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Commando Dad book 21 May 2013
By Dave
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
THis book is excellent & exactly what I was after. No nonsense straight forward guide on bringing up your baby from even before they are delivered to when they are a toddler.

I didn't make it to ante natal classes due to work commitments, and I admit my baby knowledge was non existent, so I realised I needed to learn what to do fast. THis book enable me to learn the basics & give me an idea what I needed to organise/obtain beforehand.

As a bloke, dealing with a newborn is stressful & a big learning curve, so I needed all the help I could get, & this book gave me that.

My tip to other blokes is to also read the instructions on the bottles & milk powder & steriliser you will be using, so you know what to do in the first day. This will vary amongst different bottle manufacturers & powder brands & this book does not really cover that. I didn't do that, so I had to ask the nurses how to make & sterilise bottles etc & I probably looked a bit stupid. Never mind, nothing new there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fluff-free 'Daddy' book 8 Sept. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A straight forward read which strips right through the superfluous info found in most other daddy manuals. Loved the organisation, concise descriptions with checklist supports. Easy to absorb when under the 6 month countdown. Strongly recommended and great present for Friday-night-wingmen friends on the path to fatherhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 8 Jan. 2014
By Mrs_A
Format:Kindle Edition
I found this book for my husband, and though it might be a lighthearted approach to early babycare. He has since read it from cover to cover (having struggled to get interested in any other babycare books), and has found it full of great tips and advice. Would definitely recommend to other couples!
