Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

The movie songs that Elvis recorded varied in quality, but there were so many of them that even this 62 track collection leaves out a few that are worth hearing. Each of his sixties movies is represented by at least one song, but the ones with the best soundtracks are represented by several songs.
Among the classics here are Wooden heart, Wild in the country, Blue Hawaii, Rock-a-hula baby, Can't help falling in love, Girls! girls! girls! and Return to sender - all from the early sixties. After that, there are still many fine, but less well-known songs. My favorites from the second CD include Puppet on a string (not the song that Sandie Shaw won Eurovision with, but a very different song) and Frankie and Johnny (a song which exists in many variations).
There is another song here that I didn't particularly notice until a remix of it gained Elvis another international smash hit - A little less conversation - here in it's original form.
While this is not the place to begin an Elvis collection with (unless you're a movie fan), it is the best collection you're ever likely to find of his movie songs, containing all the essentials and the best of the rest.

Elvis Aron Presley wasted more talent than most people will ever have in their entire lives. It's no secret that many of his movie songs were downright awful. That anyone could do anything with much of this tripe is a testimony to Elvis' talent.

Well, what do we have on this CD set? It's a collection of songs from his 1960's movies, with each movie being represented by at least one song (with the exception of "Tickle Me" the soundtrack of which was made up entirely of songs from older Elvis albums-nothing new). This is a great idea; there are some very good songs and some bad ones as well. It's a mixed bag, but enjoyable.

I must question some of the choices, though. 'Blue Hawaii' is over-represented. Most Elvis fans will already have the soundtrack; why put 5 songs from that album on here? 'Roustabout' is also over-represented. Missing are two of Elvis' best movie songs: "C'mon Everybody (the movie version with Ann-Margret yelping!)" and "Rubberneckin'." How can anyone leave those two songs off?! I would also have liked to hear "Drums of the Islands" from "Paradise Hawaiian Style."

Although this set represents Elvis's 60's movies, it must not be thought of as a "Greatest Hits" album. Nor is this set for the casual Elvis fan or to introduce anyone to the King. For that, you'd be better off getting the CD "Can't Help Falling in Love: The Hollywood Hits" which truly is a greatest hits album and has some GREAT songs on it with little filler.

This CD set gets five stars not because it's the greatest music, but for the fact that it fills a niche for the avid Elvis fan--a little from a lot of his movies. A few minor criticisms, but it's fine nonetheless.

Finally, in the accompanying booklet, there is the famous photo of Elvis during the filming of "Follow that Dream", holding the machine-gun to Colonel Parker: Pull the trigger, Elvis, PULL THE TRIGGER!!!

If you want a collection of Elvis's 60's imput, then this is for you.It contains highlights from each movie soundtrack, and to be honest some of these soundtracks are for the diehard fans.So this collection is the better tunes from these films, and as one can see some films are represented by one or two songs only. This is because some of these films contain poor songs.

This collection will not please everyone, but it condences about twenty or so movie soundtracks into a two cd collection

Elvis' movie years are widely. and often correctly, derided. Yet across numerous soundtrack albums from 1960-69 there was some fine material to be found for those prepared to sift out the chaff. This excellent (and sadly now deleted)collection is the best ever distillation of this difficult period of the King's career. Here we have at least one trsck from each of his 60s movies, and from his more deserving ones several, that round up pretty much all that is required for all but the most rabid fan. This compilation provides ample proof that even the most lacklustre Elvis movies included some top notch material. The only slight disappointment is that 'Follow That Dream' is included in an alternate take-great for collectors, but the master take is truly essential.
