The game presents three armies in need of command--the US, the Chinese and the Global Liberation. The game is subsequently broken down into 27 single-player missions. To throw in a further twist, you now command a general. As you progress, the general gets promoted and this opens up new technologies and tactics.
The most obvious move forward is in the graphics, with the action more close-up and detailed than before. In some ways, it takes a leaf out of the book of the excellent Medieval: Total War, but Generals is a strong game in its own right. Made suitably accessible by a tutorial campaign, it's surprisingly simple to control yet presents numerous options to mull over in every situation. The missions are varied and challenging and the arsenal of weapons--from hardware such as a scud storm through to a simple kamikaze car driver--keeps the brain constantly ticking.
Perhaps it doesn't stray too far from the tried and tested formula, choosing to do most of its building on the sturdy foundations set over the years. But there's little denying that this is polished, highly addictive and engrossing entertainment. And if you play it online, it could very easily eat your life away. --Simon Brew
To make the experience of modern war as immersive as possible, EA Pacific is using a proprietary state-of-the-art 3D engine, code-named "Sage," which delivers unprecedented detail and interactivity. Because of Sage, Generals' battlefields will include fully modelled urban cityscapes, rugged deserts, vast forests and frozen wastelands. Amazing special effects will allow players to crush cars with hulking tanks, blow out the windows of skyscrapers, or lace the skies with smoke from duelling fighter planes.
Generals will include a full single-player campaign along with a full multiplayer component played over a LAN or the Internet.

Liquid perfection...,

First things first, any one giving this 1 star needs a good slap. Second, in a world of advanced technology, it's a good idea to keep up to date! This is the best game i have ever played (and i have played quite a few!). People who like real-time games, listen up, Red alert 2 was cool but i never fancied buying it. But this is just sheer, gorgeous-looking brilliance! The units are amazing. the GLA (extremist terrorist dudes) have the oh-so reliable suicide bomber who can pilfer civilian cars and drive them straight into the bad guy base. The chinese have the Overlord which is an updated mammoth tank from the first C&C and red alert. While the American air force does'nt need an introduction. All you command and conquer nuts out there should buy this now! Just remember to turn your firewall off (and obviously block traffic for safety) otherwise you will be plagued by continous crashing. Ok you need a decent machine for this little gem, but you will thank yourself afterwards. SHEER BRILLIANCE in disc form.

I'm a big fan of the past C&C games and was looking forward with baited breath to the realise of Generals. When it came I was instantly blown away by the graphics, smooth and details (if a little resource hungry). They had for the first time changed the building and unit manufacture menus, it took a little getting used to but is straight forward enough, if a little ungainly. The units have become more akin to real life (gone are the tessla tanks and radio-active splurge guns :), I really love the marine’s abseiling into buildings from helicopters though. I think this game has some exceedingly good ideas and innovations but in doing so they have lost the fun that was rampant in Red Alert 2. After reading a previous review, I understand that Westwood is no longer, which is a pity as I would have loved to have seen what they would do with this game platform to create Red Alert 3. All in all, a good game but lacking the sparkle that make Red Alert 2 a great game.

Very Good but some flaws,

For those who don't about Command & Conquer, why not? For those who want something cerebal and a sense of realism then don't bother. For those that want a good time blasting things away in a demonic fashion then this is for you.In this you can take control of one of 3 factions of either the USA, China or the GLA each with their own particular strengths and weaknesses. USA can use high tech, China relies more on sheer numbers and the GLA (being terrorists) have various covert and guerilla methods of warfare to outwit their opponents. Each faction has their own single player campaign as well as the usual skirmish mode for free for all play, and multiplayer over the internet or network. So far going through the single player campaign as China on the Normal level it has been fairly easy so would recommend going to Hard or Brutal for a good challenge. Ok, the good news. It's great fun to play, the graphics are pretty jaw dropping (as long as you have a half decent computer to start with!) and most aspects of the game play are pretty good. The bad news is I think that the developers have swung too far to the Warcraft style of play with you having to select the buildings before being able to build your units. Gets a bit annoying when you are in the middle of a battle and need to get your units up there quick. A step back from previous Command & Conquers I think. Second is that the AI can be a bit bad. Computer units attack in a certain pre ordered place and never change their strategy. Also, if one of your units is being attacked that will fire back but none of it's friends nearby will help out. Bit poor methinks. Overall though, a good game to switch on after a long day to destress yourself and is a worthy buy.
