BBC Review

Coming To Terms is an accessible pop album teeming with low calorie, guitar-based rock, and lyrics betraying a slightly nihilistic attitude towards life.

Carolina Liar are a Los Angeles-based band, whose members are originally from Sweden apart from the lead singer, Chad Wolf who's from South Carolina. And Hollywood connections have been key to their popularity, with songs from the album appearing on teen series such as 90210, Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.

There are two types of song here: first, the smouldering ballad verse with rousing, anthemic choruses all supported by some Doves-style rock drumming underneath. This applies to Beautiful World which also includes the optional gear change, lifting up a pitch for the middle eight.

Show Me What I'm Looking For follows the same pattern, with chimes, and melodic vocals reminiscent of A-Ha. The rousing chorus includes a gospel choir, which does the trick in lifting the song further. And Simple Life features a welcome contrast in the form of the riff from Led Zep's Whole Lotta Love cheekily shoehorned in.

The other predominant template is catchy and high energy, with thrashy choruses, littered with lead guitar hooks and ride cymbal; like opener I'm Not Over and the title track.

Carolina Liar certainly follow a well trodden path of numerous Strokes-diluted bands popular in the last five years or so. They also have touches of The Killers, but are sadly lacking in personality. There's not enough variety in vocal range or instrumentation here to make them stand out from the crowd. Maybe that's the key to Carolina Liar's success, but it could result in you humming one of their songs without ever finding out who it's by. --Lucy Davies

4.0 out of 5 stars Why aren't these guys all over the radio? 6 Sep 2008
Format:Audio CD
This is a good album....new wave alternative rock executed perfectly. It's not particularly original, but when you have an album full of songs this good.....who cares. You can hear all sorts of influences.....the killers, snow patrol, coldplay, feeder. Just great songs, great melodies, kick ass choruses. Singer had a great voice and the band are awesome. Why aren't these guys all over the radio? They should be.....and its only a matter of time. If you like any of the bands above then you will definitely like this. Best thing I've heard in a while. Reccommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds fantastic! 5 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
I just listened to this album on the band's website and I have to buy it. Every song is amazing and catchy right from the start. This is not an album that will have to grow on you. It really does sound fantastic - I can't wait to own it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great album, Great Band 20 Sep 2009

Saw them at V Festival this year. They were excellent - really knew how to rock the audience. The album has some excellent tracks but a few average ones too. Will buy other albums and will go see them when they tour in their own right

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Show me what I'm looking for' 5 Sep 2009
Format:Audio CD
Having bought this album blind after hearing "Show me what I'm looking for", I cannot express how good I think this album is. Simply put and in comparison terms, Carolina Liar seems to have combined the production of The Killers, the lyrics of Death Cab and chorus of the All American Rejects into their debut offering.
Like in an MTV teen drama, this sublime album is truly music to live by.
