Biography

Every so often a truly explosive, blues-steeped star comes slamming down the pike. The ‘60s were filled with acts from Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton to Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page but each generation has since added to the legacy. Think of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Susan Tedeschi, Warren Haynes and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Now think of Davy Knowles. Think long and hard and toast a ... Read more in Amazon's Davy Knowles Store

Everything about Davy Knowles is the stuff legends are made from: superb voice, exquisite instrumentals, fabulous arrangements - the man is magic.
Coming up for Air is mellower than the previous Roll Away (when Back Door Slam had different personnel)album, and maybe that's a little bit of a shame. The rawness is missing from this album; but if you take it on it's own without trying to compare it - it's up there with the best blues rock you will ever hear. Stupendous.

I write this several months after buying the album - and let me tell you, my appreciation of it just grows and grows. Still not bored after many plays, I find some new depths to the fantastic guitar solos on this album every time. For me, Davy is head and shoulders above the 99.9% of utter drivel I hear on the radio at the moment.
Buy it and enjoy.

Davy knowles,Coming up for air.

What a superb album !You know a good album when you can listen all the way through and there aint a duff track,it's a rarity in itself.Fantastic licks and i,ve listened to it non stop for about a week, without skipping tracks.

If you want raw rock with gruff bluesy vocals then get this album.

This young, talented musician has a great future. Already recognised as something special by his peers, this CD now makes it possible for Davy Knowles to achieve a much wider audience. Once heard you will be a fan - he is a truly exciting artist who will, in my opinion, go far!

The "not so raw anymore" talent of Davy Knowles is superbly showcased in Coming Up For Air - his second album.

Right from the opening bars of the title track you can appreciate how far Davy has added to his obvious skills as a singer and guitarist in the couple of years since his debut album (as Back Door Slam) Roll Away was issued.

Every track has a fresh sound to it, and whilst each song has it's own identity, Davy has the hallmark of a great guitarist/singer of you knowing it's his song.

If I have any negative comments it's only that you can sense at times an over production which I would guess is influenced by Peter Frampton who produced the album.

Standout tracks Riverbed and Tear Down the Walls could both have been enhanced with a little less slick and a little more edge. But I'm nitpicking.

I'm backing Davy to make it big - I just hope he makes it big in the UK and doesn't just stay stateside as he progresses.

In general, this 'solo' album by Davy is a more thoughtful, varied and laid back release than 'Roll Away'. I doubt that it's a coincidence that this album is associated with 'Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam' whereas 'Roll Away' was associated with just 'Back Door Slam' and didn't obviously front-line Davy.

'Coming up for air' is a wonderful set of recordings with far fewer overt references or homages to the likes of Eric Clapton, Cream etc. This is Davy using his own musical voice - both literally and in his playing superbly fluid blues guitar. There is less emphasis on blues-rock but that in no way weakens or detracts from what is a supreme achievement by such a young player.

If you can imagine a fusion of Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Gary Moore in their respective heydays - you're going to love this album.

I was blown away by Roll away's rawness. This took more time to get into however after playing a few times I could appreciate Davy Knowles'ballads.Very different to Roll away.Good voice though.
