5.0 out of 5 stars Best combination of comics & travel writing, 10 Dec 2000
By Josh Neufeld "stoshmaster" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Comicstrips (Paperback)
This comic, which is actually called "Peter Kuper's Comics Trips: A Journal of Travels Through Africa and Southeast Asia," is a revelation, the most influential piece of travel writing I've ever read. Documenting Kuper's adventures in Africa and Asia, "Comics Trips" is part comic, part sketchbook, part photo album -- and entirely engaging. Highlights of the book include an account of a hilarious/nightmarish train ride through Tanzania in "Gorillas," and "Bangkok," a light-hearted look at the live-sex trade. "Comics Trips" is punctuated by beautiful watercolor sketches, ticket stubs and collages, and humorous photo essays like "Toilets of the World." This is the kind of comic you save from a fire.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where is the rest of the book?, 8 July 2011
By thekrunkymonkey - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Comicstrips (Paperback)
As a concept, this is brilliant and when I was younger, I loved it. As a graphic novel, as a piece of writing and as a travel memoir though, this just doesn't cut it and for one reason only: Length. At 64 pages there just isn't enough room to fit even a tenth of the substance required to cover the subject matter. The thing that always killed this for me was the fact that Mr Kuper begins by narrating some great travel stories. I remember as a 19 or 20 year old reading this on Koh Chang island in the 1990s, feeling the excitement, the travel vibe. I'm reading about his trip to see the gorillas in Rwanda and then................... nothing. Some pictures of gorillas and masks and suddenly, he's in Bangkok and then the end? WTF! Its as though he started with a full head of steam and then just kind of gave up, slapped together some of his sketches and wrote a strip from memories of BKK and that's it.

It was a true let down and made worse by the fact that this could have been sooooo good.

Buy it but don't let your expectation get as high as mine or you will be truly upset.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet, 20 Aug 2011
By S Sylvester "Optimist" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Comicstrips (Paperback)
Mr. Kuper has captured travel through sketches, water color, some photos and a comic strip format. The 2-star rater complained that it is a short book. I do not see that as a bad thing. There is enough information to make this a wonderful addition to anyone's library. I see it as a how-to for good short sweet and right to the essentials of sharing your travel experiences. This short book is the precursor to his most recent book - Diario de Oaxaca: A Sketchbook Journal of Two Years in Mexico, which I highly recommend. I am not disappointed by either book and feel that I have gained some great ideas for how to record my travels and not bore my audience.
