Product Description

Product Description

Comfortable Country draws its inspiration from the country way of life. Colours are soft whites or muted brights, and fabrics are natural. Furnishings are a beguiling mix of the contemporary and junk-shop finds effortlessly blended together. Comfortable Country advocates the joy of keeping things simple and very, very comfortable. The first part of the book looks at the influences and elements of country life that contribute to the look. These include the Changing Seasons, the Peacefulness that manifests itself in beautifully simple interiors, Nostalgia, and Utility. Comfortable Country Rooms, the second part of the book, explores how the style works in each room of the home.

I love all the rustic and simple room designs both inside and out, having purchased a cheap Stone Barn in the Limousin (France) as a permanent home and my husband and I living on a single pension we plan to buy large mirrors, old floor tiles, carved woodwork, misused french/english furniture with character to paint, upholster in soft buttermilks, creams, pale mint greens/aqua's, rose pinks, well throw in long English lace curtains (no longer fashionable) 6 curtains bought from a carboot cost £3, include some Cath Kidson or similar designer reproduction rose-toile de jouy fabric, et voila!

A cheaply furnished but welcoming home in beautiful France! This book gives us everything we need in ideas to make a lovely warm home for under £500, you don't need a lot of money, some paint/brushes-detailing, upholstery hammer, sewing machine,
(Please avoid buying fabric/curtains off on-line auctions the fabric might be old and worn thin and very expensive).

Taken from my blog, Modern Coountry Style (www.moderncountrystyle.blogspot.com):

Comfortable Country veers much more towards the Traditional Country side, rather than my favoured Modern Country Style. By that, I mean the rooms presented are more busy, patterned and full of knick-knacks and ornaments than those that I naturally lean towards. There is less of an emphasis on texture and quality, and more on chintz and swirls. That's not to say that some people wouldn't rightly love this style but it doesn't ring my bells.

A quote from the book is quite telling. 'Recapture the unassuming style of a contented era not so long ago..." Traditional style is more about looking back to the 'contented' past (although, life for a country cottage worker would have been anything but contented...) and Modern Country Style is more about taking the very best from the past and moving it forward, if that makes sense. Having said that, there are some lovely photos in Comfortable Country.

The garden section, especially, is beautiful.

The content of the book is divided into two parts, Country Influences (changing seasons, peacefulness, nostalgia, utility and natural materials) and Country Rooms. I love the utility and natural materials sections. There's plenty of inspiration.

The writing is lovely and really draws you into the heart of the book, which is about creating the feel of comfort and relaxation within a country setting and that is where Traditional and Modern Country Style's paths DO cross.

Overall, Comfortable Country is a nice book to have. Not so much for the pictures, although the are plenty of gorgeous images, but for the text, which has a good mix of practical suggestions and dreamy and evocative inspiration.

If you are like me and aspire to having a comfortable, welcoming and inviting home - but like to spend a LOT of time at the planning stage (sitting in the garden with a coffee; reading in bed on a Sunday morning; etc etc) then you will love this book. Few people want to copy an idea slavishly so that the end result is a 'stage set' ("Don't eat those apples! They are for decoration!!") and this book gives you lots and lots of ideas which will adapt to whatever type of house you have - be it the archetypal country cottage;a terraced house or - like us - something that defies description!

It was fun reading this book and I most definitely will be using some of the ideas, adapting them to our particular home and lifestyle.

I heartily recommend this book for anyone who wants inspiration but not a blueprint for decorating their home.
