Thia book follows the life of Gus Simpson a TV chef whose ratings are falling and who is forced into a new show with the younger Carmen Vega, a former Miss Spain, and very ambitious.

We also get to meet a variety of characters from the TV channel, Gus' two daughters - the pampered Sabrina and the more sensible Aimee, and her neighbour and good friend, former child tennis star Hannah.

Although I enjoyed the book, I did feel some aspects failed to ring true - Gus' romance in the latter part of the book, and the changes in attitude of some characters seem a bit speedy - the ending was a little too neat.

Perhaps after the deserved success of The Friday Night Knitting Club, this novel was a little rushed to come out while demand was high?

With hindsight, one to have borrowed from the library instead of buy.

Format: Paperback
Gus Simpson needs to increase the ratings for her TV cooking show. Before she can think up any good ideas she finds herself forced to co-present a programme with Carmen - a former Miss Spain - who is trying to break into TV cooking. The rival for her crown is not the only problem for Gus as she feels her adult daughters - Aimee and Sabrina - need help with their lives and then there's her friend from next door - Hannah - who seems determined to turn herself into a recluse. Gus feels her life is out of control. How she resolves her problems and what happens to the rest of these lovable characters makes for entertaining reading. It's not a 5 star book as far as I'm concerned because some of the writing leaves a little to be desired and the text maybe could have done with a bit more editing, but it's an enjoyable read and I preferred it to 'The Friday Night Knitting Club' which I found a little too sentimental. 'Comfort Food' is more down to earth I felt with many humorous moments and a lighter touch altogether.

Format: Paperback
Comfort Food' is set in New York and centres around Gus (short for Augusta), a widow who is just turning 50. For the past twelve years Gus has been a hard-working single mother - her two daughters are both now adults, although neither of them are 'grown up'. Gus is the star of a succesful TV cookery show.

The beginning of the story tells how Gus is having mixed feelings about her impending 50th birthday and doesnt really feel like organising one of her famous partys. Everything seems to be going wrong - the budget for her show is cut and he is expected to work alongside Carmen - a very young and very beautiful up and coming cookery show host.

Aswell as Gus - there are a whole host of other characters, her two daughters and Hannah, her reclusive neighbour who has a big secret.

This is a very light and enjoyable read - Gus is a likeable character. The story is a little predictable but great for a lazy Sunday afternoon or sun lounger read.
