This is an excellent book for those who have not heard of the Earthship concept. It is by no means a stand-alone book however, but a tantalising taste of living on the planet using the infinite power of the sun, the wind and the rain. The used-tyre constructed dwellings also recycle cans and recycle human waste. They are referred to as ships, as opposed to houses because they do more than provide shelter; being complete, self-sustaining units.
'Comfort in any climate' is the central premise of the book as it concentrates on the geographical flexibility of this 30 year-old method of build. From sub-zero temperatures to equatorial climates; from the harshest winter to the most sweltering summer in the same locale, this book can answer those questions which automatically pop up. Such questions as: 'Do the tyres smell?', 'Are they a fire hazard?' and 'Does this mean I have to live in a black hole in the ground?'
This book shows that humankind is facing a future of diminishing fuel supplies and spiraling bills. The delightful endpiece by the genius behind the Earthship entitled, 'A Rock and a Feather', is both chilling and optimistic, and did not leave this reader with any doubts as to how to proceed.
