Book Description

Magical realism permeates this story of two misfit climbers who encounter more than they bargained for while climbing in a haunting Utah canyon.

Terry Lockton, no longer young, but not yet old, finds in climbing an antidote to his disaffection with society. And the strangely coincidental and untimely deaths of three friends has forced Terry to concede that life is fleeting and moments must be seized. But his evolving responsibilities to his family are leading him away from his passion for climbing, and into the heart of a lifestyle for which he is ill-equipped.

How will Terry cope with the suffocating demands of a workaday world if he loses the source of his inspiration? Will he be able to abandon climbing, and still retain his sense of self? These questions must be answered, but Terry has no answers.
His partner, Henry “Hacksaw” Montgomery – an aging, itinerant climber – uses his obsessive pursuit of the next adrenaline rush to stay one step ahead of a tragic past haunting his every adventure. But memories full of regret are like gravity, omni-present and unrelenting. What will give him the strength to shake his demons and move on?

Set in the timeless, expansive canyon country of Southeastern Utah, the tension in this tale of climbing, choices, and ancient ghosts will inexorably bring you to the edge of your seat, and keep you there until the last page is turned.

This is the story of two misfit climbers who wandered off the map in the vast, lonely reaches of the Canyonlands of Utah when adventure and the Unknown still held sway.

It is also the story of a long and deep friendship. It's 1988 and Terry Lockton and his pal, Henry `Hacksaw' Montgomery, are in the final stages of a climbing expedition that could be their swan-song as a team.

Throughout their journey, both friends know that it's Terry's crunch-time for making life-changing decisions, weighing personal responsibilities against personal dreams and the meaning of freedom. Both men know sacrifices are inevitable. Hacksaw wants to help Terry make the right decision but how far will he go to ensure an outcome that Terry's wife, Susan and their kids will be happy with? Which path will Terry take?

Viene La Tormenta is the vivid account of an adventure that takes in hair raising climbs and colorful situations; an adventure that leads relentlessly towards its inexorable resolution...

This tale opens with Hacksaw and Terry most of the way through their `last gasp' four-month road trip, on their way to Anasazi Canyon, Utah, for possibly their one final climb together. On the way they have a strange encounter, plunging the reader into what feels vaguely like a blend of Freak Brothers meet Carlos Castaneda's Don Juan - but things aren't exactly what they seem...

A poignant, mystical, gritty and very moving tale of two free spirits and how they deal with some serious soul-searching amid the beautiful desert and mountain landscape and the moods of the weather.

This is the original Alternative Great American Story and there is Truth, Beauty, Loss, Triumph and a great heart to be found in these pages. I enjoyed spending time with these guys, in their world. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comes the Storm: Viene la Tormenta, most intriguing to the point of not being able to set it down! 4 July 2014

I will use simple words for a book which took my breath away and my mind into the mystery of another possible level in life. The book was very hard to put down for me. I am by no means a climber but the discription of what they used and how they used their equipment put me right there with them. For me the story became personal when the two fellows arrived in Flagstaff, AZ. Being from the Four Corners area I knew exactly where they were at all times and I was riding in the van with them. The author must of traveled the route himself for to have such perfect discriptions of the surrounding landscape to the boys final destination.

The stop in Tuba City, AZ is where the author begins to slowly take your mind to another possible level in life. This mystery stays with you till the end of the book. Beyond the light of the campfire you also find the darkness and brilliant stars calling you to see what may be beyond the light.

The final day of their trip carries you right along with them, at the point of almost coiling the ropes and feeling the sandstone against your own hands and mystery is still there like a stream running just under the sand. When it breaks to the surface, you either believe or you don't.

I have recommended this book to many and will continue to do so. This is one of the best reads I have had the pleasure to put before me.
