Terribly American and very brash! Not my scene. I tired of it after listening to it twice. Will give it away

Swings with a Few Misses 7 Aug. 2014
By Richard E. Berger - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
After listening to Forbidden Broadway for 20 years I realize it must be hard for the creative genius of Gerard Alessandrini and Philip George to remain...creative. There is going to be some repetition, predictability and less moments of brilliance. That unfortunately is the case here but fortunately not too frequent which is why I give it 4 stars.

Let's get the misses out of the way. GA's look at Pippin really has so few criticisms other than the circus format is silly and adds nothing to the show. To emphasize that fact, this parody number needs more silliness to feel relevant. While the Cabaret parody is spot on, the comparison to Liza's Sally was already done in Volume Five which featured Natasha Richardson's Sally. Fortunately the Michelle Williams impression sounds nothing like the Natasha. The Mandy Patinkin parody was also previously featured in Volume Two and for me it is not that interesting that he is still doing his same old shtick. I find myself wishing they could find a new cabaret performer to spoof. While The Bridges of Madison County parody is quite funny with its sexual double entendre, the barbs thrown at Jason Robert Brown don't sting that much. He is a prolific composer who thinks very highly of himself and uses social media to promote. Not different than any other. He actually needs the self-promotion. He is a two time Tony winner but no one really knows who he is. So to these numbers I say "Who Cares, So What?"

This (can you believe?) TWELFTH edition of Forbidden Broadway, thankfully mainly swings. The numbers are humorously insightful while the impressions are excellent as always. The appearance of Liza while predictable on "Michelle Williams and Liza" is perfect on "Liza-So What" It's always a joy to hear Harvey Fierstein impressions on these recordings. He is becoming as much a welcome regular as Liza and Carol Channing. Love the Juke Box Medley performers revealing the lack of originality on Broadway and funny take on the strange and confusing adaptations of the movies Rocky and Bullets Over Broadway. Cinderella gets crowned as pointless and bland. Aladdin continues Disney's dominance with the schlock overdose and Les Miserables ditches its turntable for overhead projections which in turn makes us ignore the actors on stage. My favorite is the Sound of Music Live parody. From a professional theater perspective like Alessandrini and George, Carrie Underwood starring as Maria in the Sound of Music would be seem quite odd but her popularity is perfect for the t.v. ratings. Carter Calvert has Carrie Underwood down to a t and for that matter Liza down with a Z! Tomorrow Belongs is a perfect conclusion about the state of Broadway funded today by corporations instead of lovers of theater.

My only other criticism is I miss Alessandrini's liner notes providing more insight into his writing of these numbers which I felt enhanced previous editions. So we have to allow these tracks to speak for themselves. He would probably say to that "Who Cares, So What?"

The latest skewering from Gerard Alessandrini... 29 July 2014
By Steven L. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Gerard Alessandrini has been skewering the latest Broadway shows and stars through his “Forbidden Broadway” franchise for almost three decades. Incessantly culling the current news from the Great White Way has provided Alessandrini, his quartet of actors, and accompanist David Caldwell with the fodder for a plethora of comedy songs and routines. No celebrity or production has proven immune to the roasting of this series of recordings, and "Forbidden Broadway Comes Out Swinging" proves no exception.

Actors Carter Calvert, Scott Richard Foster, Mia Gentile, and Marcus Stevens give spot-on impersonations of the hottest Broadway names today, including Fran Drescher (“Cinderella”), Frankie Valli (“Jersey Boys”), Jason Robert Brown (“Bridges of Madison County”), and of course, Idina Menzel (“If/Then” and the latest Disney phenomenon, “Frozen”).

The “Bridges” parody is hysterical, with Calvert and Foster commenting on the quantity of sex scenes in the show, as sung by the stars of the show, Kelli O'Hara and Stephen Pasquale; Stevens' maniacal butchering of director Matthew Warchus’ torturing all the child star wannabes who want to be in his production of “Matilda,” gives Miss Hannigan a classic run for her money, and the men's discussion of the lack of diction in “Rocky,” featuring Foster as an incoherent Sylvester Stallone, is spot on.

The show even seizes the opportunity to continue its generation-long scouring of “Les Miserables,” lambasting Cameron Mackintosh once again, this time for the new revival's abuse of projections and the "firing" of the turntable that was a staple of the classic musical.

There's no lack of source material available for "Forbidden Broadway Comes Out Swinging" so why do we need another Liza Minelli or Mandy Patinkin segment? Given that small punch below the belt, the show may not score a knockout, but it definitely earns the unanimous decision.

Give it your Full Attention 28 July 2014
By B. Goldberg - Published on Amazon.com

To appreciate this CD, give it your full attention and listen to all the lyrics. As with all the Forbidden Broadway CDs, a talented cast spoofs the actors and lyrics in Broadway shows. It's helpful to have seen at least one Forbidden Broadway because the wigs, costumes, and make-up add to the fun, also very helpful to have seen the shows that are parodied. They almost always do a delightful Liza imitation, the latest FB is no exception. This isn't a disk to listen to while doing other tasks.

MORE FORLAUGHS THAN FORBIDDEN....... 23 Aug. 2014
By Neil Elliot - Published on Amazon.com

They never seem to get tired....even when they "honor" some of the same people. It's a joy to laugh my lungs out listening to these brilliantly crafted "homages" to the world of Broadway's gift to the world. Puns, farce, spoofs....all done with a masterful touch and voices that have their own right to be on Broadway. Thanks GA for your years of gifts.

but some are stellar like the Mathilda parody 14 Aug. 2014

A few duds here and there, but some are stellar like the Mathilda parody: "My mummy says I'm a triple threat." Chortle. Also, the Liza number is not only fun, but triumphant and defiant as well - very serious for Alessandrini.
