5.0 out of 5 stars A recipe for living your life, 21 Aug 2010

E. Consalvi - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Comedy and the Tragedy (Audio Cassette)
I finished listening to this book an hour ago, and I am not in the mood to be witty, incisive, or clever. In fact my emotions are all over the place.

Overall I would describe it as "completely delicious". Bad things that happened after "the trouble", such as attempting to dine at the Saville Club and feeling like a lion surrounded by a room full of Daniels, sent him out of London to Paris. Where he continues to live with the self-confidence and moral authority which had made him the darling of the litterati and the well-connected. Only this time he is dodging invoices which are presented to him at breakfast and dinner by the management of the hotel in which he lives.

There is no sign of self-pity. Loss of friends; loss of status; made bankrupt; divorced; humiliated; imprisoned. Every negative experience is met with ironic - but not bitter - humour. He is so immensely wise.

But I wished that this book had ended differently. Till then Oscar had been so upbeat. But when the Law forbade him to ever see his two small children again, and the only thing he had left was to look at the occasional photograph he was sent, I felt that this was a blow from which he could never recover. I still feel horrible about it.

In short, "Oscar Wilde: The Comedy and the Tragedy" - I absolutely loved it!
