This is an early Trevor Nunn musical and is an excellent version of A Comedy of Errors. Although it is set in more modern times, the dialogue is true to Shakespeare and it all works very well. Its presented as a play, on a stage, and there is a live audience, AND it has the same cast as the original theatre production (how lucky can we get!)
Dame Judi Dench is fantastic as always. Roger Rees, Mike Gwilym, Michael Williams, Nicolas Grace and Francesca Annis are delightful. Robin Ellis as Dr. Pinch is a hoot, and he has one of the best musical numbers. The entire cast is terrific in a funny and highly entertaining production. The song and dance numbers are great but do not overwhelm the story (or the comedy).
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this show many times and I highly recommend it. But please, won't someone release a remastered version on DVD? Some extra features - a commentary, perhaps - would be the icing on the cake, but I won't be greedy!
