This is the definitive Comedian Harmonists collection with three CDs containing all the favourites. The recordings are very good quality considering they were recorded in the late twenties/early thirties.

The Harmonists' beautifully constructed harmonies and quirky versions of popular classics instantly bring to life the atmosphere of the era of the last decadent years of the old post-WW1 Weimar Republic.

The story of the group has a sad ending as they were forced to disband at the height of their career by the Nazis, because Frommermann, Cycowski and Collin were identified as being either Jewish or of Jewish descent, and so they gave their last concert as the original group in Hannover on 25th March 1934.

Two subsequent groups were formed from the ashes, and they had limited success both in Germany and abroad for a while. However these recordings are by the original lineup - Harry Frommermann, Robert Cycowski, Ari Leschnikoff, Erich Collin, Robert Biberti and Erwin Bootz the pianist. With this collection we have at least a legacy of some wonderful performances of timeless classics.

Buy This Set AND the "Golden Greats" Disky Set 26 July 2012
By David S. Baumgartner - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The Harmonists' various CDs contain many of the same songs but this set of THREE CDs contains songs that are not included in the single CDs AND at a lower price. SO if you are considering which CD to buy, look no further. This is a best buy in a secure plastic box of 3 CDs. No texts or information, just song titles and record numbers. The Harmonists were the 20th century's finest, most clever, original and creative small singing ensemble with smooth subtle blend, delightful, original and exciting arrangements and internal transitions within a song of marvelous, magical mellow fluent creamy and amiable and graceful flow. No other group was even close. Ganz wunderbar, ausgezeichnet und enzückend! The only question is WHO is the chubby short man in the middle of the picture?

This is an amended review because I strongly recommend that you also buy the 3 CD set "Golden Greats" on the Disky (a German) label as it contains songs not in this set including 5 songs by the "Comedy Harmonists", the group started by the three Jewish members who had to leave Germany in c 1935. There are, of course, some duplications, but with both sets you get on six CDs all the memorable Harmonists songs at a price still less than most of the single CDs.

Comedian Harmonists 19 Feb. 2007

Delightful music, wonderful harmony and clever use of voices. Saw the movie called The Harmonists and became enraptured with these men. There must be 50 cd's to choose from, but this one incorporated their best work.

Not for everyone 30 April 2014
By Craig Reynolds - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Reading the history of the Comedian Harmonists one might lament that their time as a top club attraction was so short, but I think their tight singing style would have confined them to those few magical years circling around 1930 in any event. Melodically mild, confined to easy but pleasurably precise harmonizing by the group's seven members who reach not notably far outside their combined four-octave comfort zone. The most interesting thing is how the group prefigures the Swingle Singers, though in this collection there's only one number which is all tone, no text. In younger and happier days of a mere four or so decades ago, I envision I might have stayed up late with their recordings on the Victrola as I enjoyed a light tawny port while puffing on a good pipe (or cigar) into the early morning hours, a kitty alongside. But in these 21st Century years, I'm simply glad the Comedian Harmonists had been around to leave for us more tunefully discriminating listeners still enduring through this present their unique recordings from a long-past, longingly misremembered, melodious and gone time.

Lively And Humorous Vocal Harmonies 28 May 2013
By brotagonist - Published on
Format: Audio CD
The Comedian Harmonists, active from 1928-34, received world-wide acclaim. Their repertoire consisted of folk, popular and classical songs, rendered in lively and humorous vocal harmonies. This 3CD set is fantastic!
