Minnie Riperton's debut album "Come to My Garden" is a wonderful collection of tunes. Songs such as "Completeness" invoke images of late summer nights, and in general the mood easily shifts from chilled out to dramatic. Minnie's amazing voice and the beautiful rhythm arrangements by the great Ramsey Lewis make this a must-have.

I am of the opinion that I will never hear my favourite album because there is so much music out there, that even with the dire state of the music scene then there is still enough music out there to miss hundreds of gems. Minnie Riperton would have been one of these but for me hearing some Rotary Connection on Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone 3-4 years ago. I always knew of Minnie Riperton from the huge hit 'Loving You' when I was a child, but that was all I knew and since then I have been going through the back catalogue. Being a big fan of Stevie Wonder's work around this time, I love Perfect Angel and the later albums are enjoyable but quite emotional listening knowing what Minnie was going through at this time. I have to agree with Mr SL Smith that Come to my Garden, her solo debut, is one of those albums that you have to listen to every week. It is so wonderfully produced by the late Charles Stepney and her vocal range sends a shiver down my spine. We lost an angel when Minnie was far too young, but her music remains a legacy for her perfect voice.

I do think Minnie Riprton is one great and very special singer, giving real soulful passion to her songs. But to me I am afraid this first release shows too much influence from arrangers and technicians, to me she had still more to learn about the "music world", The song structure falls short of her later work, but does certainly have pointers to the forth coming brilliant career ahead, all be it way too short. One could almost say it has a reminiscence of mediocre sixty's Motown, or maybe a Dusty Springfield not in form, please don't get me wrong, her voice is not awful, just weaker than her later output, also it is back in the mix on her high note work with the instrumentation.

In fairness this is an early work, and in being so maybe of great interest to fans whom collect everything she has been involved in, in which case it is not terrible, with that voice how could it be, but to those of you that love her later material, be prepared for a bit of disappointment. The other, and worst thing is the recording used for the download and CD.

There are real issue with this, there are clicks and pops throughout the music, I wish I still had a record player, at least the manufacturer would not be the reason for this annoyance. On cheaper systems this would, possibly not disturb the listener too much.
