Tommy Bolin!! 25 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
OK! OK! Its not Richie Blackmore, but youre not THAT narrow minded, are you? Good tunes are good tunes and this is brimming over! The complete lack of repect for this album is due to one T.Bolin and let the kid play! Its hard, its funky, check 'Getting Tighter' and what about 'TheDealer' or 'Ode to G'?

Yeah yeah,he aint Blackmore, but Blackmore aint Bolin in my mind, could never see what all tha fuss was about, but Bolin?

He fills this disc with funk laden riffs, choppy solos, echoplex fireworks and a wailing bitey tone, and its right in the middle of his coke/smack head period! (he o'd around a year later) Check his earlier works; Zeypher-live, Energy, Billy Cobham's Spectrum (all from round 72/73) to see how incendery he could be!!

His approach was VERY different to Blackmores, but with GlenHughes in there too, it could only end up like this.

Coverdale hasn't sung better and wheres Paice since? This has to be Paiceys best period!!

You can hear them breathe, have space to try new ideas without tha Blackmore holding them back and sulking in the corner.

The only thing that held this line up back was Bolins drug use in the live arena. In my mind, his playing was far worse in 76, until November/December (Live at the JetBar)

A great album, not considered by many a 'Real Deep Purple' album, but if the band had a different name, they'd LOVE it!!

Like a fungus 28 July 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
First impressions - "Ugh", but it grows on you!

Too complex to like immediately, repeated listenings really reward you - it's almost like a movie soundtrack in its variety.

Make no mistake, it's a rock album, but there's plenty of funk, heavy metal riffs, even piano slowies. If you like a wide variety of bands and appreciate music of different styles for being "good" you will come to love this album.

Over the years theres been a lot of arguments over the merits of deep purple mark 4 and in particular Tommy Bolins work with the band. This album blows away any possible critisism it is a classic which has lost none of its power since its release 27 years ago.I was lucky enough to have seen this version of the band live and while they may not have been firing on all cyliders playing live.this takes nothing away from the musical genius displayed on this album.from the blistering rock of Dealer(with some of the most intricate interplay between guitar and keyboard you will ever hear) through they power funk of Love child and onto the beautiful melodies of This time around. This album has the lot.Buy it you will not be disappointed

Just taste it!
The trouble is that many Deep Purple fans just want to hear regurgitated 'In Rock's' and 'Machine Head's' and aren't open to new sounds and styles. Read more
