Book Description

Four women gather for a reunion in the Malvern Hills.

Product Description

There were four of them: young women, dressed decorously in black, employed at an exclusive jewellery store in the 1960s. Close friendships were forged as Natasha, Prudence, Rachel and Maisie worked together under the benevolent rule of the two Markham brothers. Now, in 1980, Natasha, newly divorced and back from America with a fifteen-year-old daughter, decides there must be a reunion. Pru, always the mysterious one, deeply involved with her commune in Cornwall, unexpectedly offers Prospect House, a property she has inherited in the Malvern hills where they may all forgather. Rachel, married to her former boss, a Liberal MP, gladly leaves a tangled domestic situation to join the friends she hasn’t seen for so long. And Maisie ... Maisie, perhaps the most vulnerable of the four, mother of five children, married to the unpredictable Edward, fails to arrive at Prospect House. The drama of her disappearance has a far-reaching effect on the lives and destinies of them all. Come Rain or Shine is a poignant and unforgettable story of the particularly close friendships that women enjoy - and of the complications that can arise when friends meet again after many years have passed.

This is the first of Susan sallis's books that I have read. It had a good set of characters and an interesting storyline.

There are five friends that decide to have a reunion after being apart fifteen years. Pru, a lesbian who runs a commune, Natasha, who lives in america and has just divorced her husband. Rachel, an overweight politicians wife and Edith, an elderly lady.

Maisie is married to a domineering man who is constantly punishing her for an affair she had years previously. He is a violent man, she suffers his beatings and the bullying. It is only when she discovers he is sleeping with her housemaid, whom she thought of as a mother figure that she leaves. The whole book is centred about the whereabouts of Maisie as she dissapears and does not arrive for the reunion.

While the search for maisie goes on, the four remaining friends are on the run from the violent husband who is intent on punishment. The four friends take refuge in an old house which is miles from anywhere and is very limited in modern comforts. As the search for maisie continues, you see the four friends beginning to solve the problems in their lives. You see them pulling together and their characters changing for the better.

I will not spoil the ending, but needless to say, it is a happy one for all characters. (apart from the violent husband!)

I am reading my way through Susan Sallis books and this was my latest. It is not, in my opinion, her best but it is very enjoyable and, once again, she really gets 'inside' her characters especially Maisie. I wasn't prepared for the Lesbian aspect but it was just one of the many threads she weaves so sensatively!
If you are considering Susan Sallis - my favourite (so far) is 'No Man's Island'.
