This is the first of Susan sallis's books that I have read. It had a good set of characters and an interesting storyline.
There are five friends that decide to have a reunion after being apart fifteen years. Pru, a lesbian who runs a commune, Natasha, who lives in america and has just divorced her husband. Rachel, an overweight politicians wife and Edith, an elderly lady.
Maisie is married to a domineering man who is constantly punishing her for an affair she had years previously. He is a violent man, she suffers his beatings and the bullying. It is only when she discovers he is sleeping with her housemaid, whom she thought of as a mother figure that she leaves. The whole book is centred about the whereabouts of Maisie as she dissapears and does not arrive for the reunion.
While the search for maisie goes on, the four remaining friends are on the run from the violent husband who is intent on punishment. The four friends take refuge in an old house which is miles from anywhere and is very limited in modern comforts. As the search for maisie continues, you see the four friends beginning to solve the problems in their lives. You see them pulling together and their characters changing for the better.
I will not spoil the ending, but needless to say, it is a happy one for all characters. (apart from the violent husband!)
