Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

At 32, Hayley Willis is making her debut a lot later than most people in her line of work, but that's not a problem: Come Get Some is an album of songs of experience, and Willis's voice, words and music sound all the better for the lengthy gestation that this startlingly fine album has endured.

The music on Come Get Some is far more redolent of the southern United States than the southern estates of London: a sparse, feral swampy blues, occasionally reminiscent of the more tender moments of Sixteen Horsepower ("Paper and Stone" and "Talk to Me" are particular highlights). Overall, comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Bobby Gentry and, especially, PJ Harvey would not be unreasonable, but they wouldn't tell the entire story. Willis may well be that rarest of things in a ridiculously oversubscribed field: something genuinely original. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Superb. 9 Feb 2004
By Bex
Format:Audio CD
This is the first ever review I have submitted, but having bought this album on recommendation I felt other people should know how superb this album is. An amazing voice, coupled with bluesy and 'singalong' songs. This immediatley enters my top favourite albums alongside, Thea Gilmore, Dar Williams, Indigo Girls, Counting Crows, Kathryn Williams etc.
(This is just to give you an idea of the other stuff I like, as I often look at reviews and note if I like the same kind of music - can you tell I am new at this ! ) Anyway buy it. Its great. .

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and brilliant 30 Mar 2005
Format:Audio CD
I heard of Willis via a Winter Chill album by Hed Kandi. The track on that cd - November - is still my favourite Willis song but there are plenty of close runners on here. Hayley's voice is quite simply phenomenal, how Joss Stone has got all the publicity I don't know, because Willis is equally as good. My friend actually thought it was the gravel-eating Ben Ottowell from Gomez singing at first!!
Generally great album, ideal for sitting back to and relaxing after a hard day's slog at the apple factory.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware the 20 Dec 2003
By Andy Millward VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Hayley Willis has remarkable talent, which is partially but not completely realised on this debut album. Her astonishing voice is a nuclear weapon in the making - stark, strong and smoky, drenched in Mississippi country-soul, at times raw but kept mostly on the leash. At her most soulful she sounds uncannily like Carmel McCourt (remember Carmel's stark rendition of Tracks of my Tears?), but she also delivers bluesy country numbers like a Louisiana sharecropper. Her lyrics are world-weary, often bitter and cynical and packed with heartaches. The one thing you'd never guess is that she originates from London. America - your loss!

The arrangements on this collection are designed to bring the best out of that formidable voice - simple, direct country/blues without a hint of over-elaboration. Achingly beautiful guitar, piano and violin arrangements act as a backdrop to the main event.

However, some of the countryish ballads dilute some of the more powerful material. Perhaps Hayley's songs fail to deliver the knockout punch that could transform her into superstardom. Like Janis Joplin and many others before her, selecting the best material to exploit her capabilities may take a little time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait! 5 Nov 2003
Format:Audio CD
It may have taken Hayley Willis a long time to get this album made but it's been well worth the wait. She's been compared to both Joni Mitchell and PJ Harvey, but comparisons are pointless. Willis is a unique talent. I caught her performance of "Paper and Stone" on Jools Holland and immediately bought the album. It's now my favourite of 2003 and is in my all time top ten.

Please, do us all a favour, buy this album, make this woman a star, and hopefully the next album won't take so long to arrive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zero 7 Support 20 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
Willis supported Zero 7 on their gig and they were superb. Their music is excellent. They had the crowd ready for Zer0 & i think they wil have great success. If you like Zero 7 or Magnet or anything like that this album is a must!

4.0 out of 5 stars Try it, you might like it....I did 21 Mar 2005
Format:Audio CD
A great collection of songs from a very talented female. A voice of gravel and urgency will draw you into a, generally, upbeat collection of folk-based gems.
One of my best finds of the last three years.
I have, in turn purchased this album as a present for a number of friends and they all love it, as varied as their tastes are.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a Majestic 18 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
I was lucky enough to catch this band supporting Zero7 (both were awesome) recently and I was blown away with thier performance. They started with "Paper and Stone" which with is Beautiful drum beat is a must listen to song and her voice in "Take You High" was almost hypnotic, "oh Brother" is a wonderful ballad.

The album is a fantatic mixture of great tracks and Hayley Willis voice is just somthing your have to hear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic. 22 July 2008
Format:Audio CD
I was able to buy her version of "Word Up" from iTunes after it featured during an episode of "CIS Something or Other" the wife is now addicted to in her pregnancy.

I was talking to a friend the other day who said she had seen Willis live at a festival and that she was great so I thought I would buy the album. I am now listening to it again as the first play was not enough.

13 tracks of laid back wonderfulness. "November" stands out as the killer track for me, the performance is "flawed" as she moves away and then too close to the microphone and her voice cracks as well at one point. But these "flaws" are what makes the difference between passion and perfectly timed pap like "Steps".

I wonder if any of these tracks are "filler" - because if they are, her "filler" is way above the output of other artists.

When we are assaulted by mass produced rubbish such as the X-Factor and over 1000 other assorted flavours of dog dirty, this album gives me hope in the music business again.
