Product Description

CD Description
Curve made three albums in just over two years--one of them, PUBIC FRUIT, a compilation of three EPs--before splintering in 1993. Four years later, the duo of Toni Halliday (vocals) and Dean Garcia (keyboards) returned with an unexpected new album which both adapts and abandons the My Bloody Valentine-like miasma of their earlier records.
The enormous UKsuccess of groups like Prodigy and Underworld was not lost on Halliday and Garcia, who here follow those groups' mixture of techno electronic sheen and rock & roll wallop. At times, they follow a bit too closely--the opening single, "Chinese Burn", sounds more than a little like Underworld's "Born Slippy"--and as usual on Curve's albums there's a homogeneity to the sound that stays only barely on the right side of sameyness. But on the whole COME CLEAN is an outstanding example of mid-'90s dance rock with at least two other smolderingly intense songs, "Killer Baby" and "Alligators Getting Up".

5.0 out of 5 stars raw, electronic sound with female vocals, 22 Dec 2000
This review is from: Come Clean (Audio CD)
One of the best albums of the 90s, sadly almost unknown. The music runs from driving, to mellow, to out and out wall of noise (one of my favourite tracks, Dog Bone). It's very difficult to find a comparison; perhaps Tricky or Massive Attack might get closest, but I suspect one of the reasons it didn't get the recognition it deserved is that the sound is like nothing else, a mashed up concoction of synthesisers, strong vocal melodies heavily re-engineered, bass and drums to keep it going, and the occasional squawl of guitar to turn it into a true masterpiece. In its approach to sound it reminds me as much of the Pixies as anything (this is a good thing). Buy this album while you still can, or you'll miss out on one of the best albums of the last decade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Curve make a return, 17 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Come Clean (Audio CD)
'Come Clean' sees the return of Curve to the musical stage. Toni Halliday and Dean Garcia are back with a cracking album and a modern sound. The opener, and first single, 'Chinese Burn' is a real cracker - like a danced up and heavy curve song should be.

The other highlights are 'Coming Up Roses' and 'Recovery' which are equally rockin. The whole album has a more dancy feel than the older LPs and this is probably due to the lack of a full (perm) band behind Dean and Toni (not that matters at all). All the tracks stand up for themselves and you don't feel like there are any fillers either. This is a good introduction to Curve for new listeners.. who will find it hard to get hold of the older records.. but once your bitten you'll be looking for them. Curve are Back! (Lean and Mean). Quite simply if you liked Curve a few years back you'll dig this album. If you dig Garbage you will really like this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'd get one my knees, but I'm not allowed...", 11 Jan 2005
This review is from: Come Clean (Audio CD)
This is most definatly the most impressive thing I have heard from Curve yet. I know I can almost guarantee I'll love anything Curve do, but with this, even I was shocked at the quality. Toni and Dean have out done themselves!

Toni's vocals are, as always, unequalled. And as always, Dean rises to the challenge of providing a solid sound that not only supports them, but elevates them in some cases. And of course, what would a Curve album be without some catchy snippets of lyrics that get stuck in your head all day? All of the songs work, and gel togeather nicely. And I feel something has to be said about the design of the CD case and booklet, which are in their own right quite amazing. Especially the odd song quote sneaked in here and there.

All in all, there is really no excuse not to own an album of this quality.
