Shirley goes to the beach with her parents, who spend the whole time grunting and complaining at her - on the left hand page of each double page. On each right hand page, you see the imaginative world Shirley lives in - fighting priates and finding treasure. The wonderful thing is that only her parents' voices are reported and not a single word is used to describe Shirley's feelings. It is all there in the contrast between the two sets of images which makes the tragedy of the child's loneliness exquisite. Steven Spielberg could learn a lot from this book.

We first borrowed this from the library, and enjoyed it so much we ended up getting our own copy. Shirley's parents' view of the world is on the left page, while Shirley's own imaginative adventure is on the right. Since the words correspond only to Shirley's parents, we are able to look at the pictures from Shirley's own imaginative adventure and make up the words. It invites the child to examine the picture and to describe Shirley's own adventure in his/her own way.

This was excellent and my daughter loved it. We made up the story line along with reading the book so were able to use our imagination.
