Another impressive collection of 1960s singles from ace singer and songwriter Jackie DeShannon. The singles come from the original master recordings, and the CD includes some interesting liner notes with commentary from Jackie DeShannon. This volume begins in 1964 with a couple of lively Buddy Holly covers and ends in 1967 with her foray into urbane pop music. In between is her soulful, top-selling performance of Burt Bacharach's "What the World Needs Now is Love"; another big hit ("When You Walk in the Room"--the Searchers took it to the top five in the U.K.); a lovely song she recorded with the Byrds ("Splendor in the Grass"); two tough but sweet rock singles, one with pre-Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page ("I Remember the Boy," "Don't Turn Your Back on Me"); two emotional ballads co-written by Randy Newman ("Hold Your Head High" and "She Don't Understand Him"); a raucous cover of "It's Love, Baby (24 Hours a Day)"; several girl group influenced pieces ("Will You Love Me Tomorrow?," "Are You Ready for This?," "I Can Make it With You," "Be Good Baby"); and a cute sing-a-long ("He's Got the Whole World in His Hands"). The lesser-known Bacharach/David songs are also very good--"Windows and Doors," "A Lifetime of Loneliness," "So Long Johnny," and the melancholy "Come and Get Me." The current volume follows on the heels of "The Complete Liberty Singles Vol. 1" and "The Songs of Jackie DeShannon," both of which I've enjoyed immensely.
