Product Description

Hank Ballard was one of the most influential R&B artists of the 1950s and the man who wrote and first recorded "The Twist". He was also a major inspiration for James Brown during this period. Includes both sides of all of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters singles recorded between 1954 and 1959 which amounts to a whopping 58 tracks including 9 US chart hits such as: "Work With Me Annie" and "Sexy Ways". This is the first time that all of the groups singles have ever been presented in one package. In addition are fully detailed liner notes explaining Hank Ballard and his groups rise from R&B stars to pop stars.

So, was Hank Ballard worth remembering for any other reason than having invented the Twist? Well, yes, he was also the starter of the song series starting with "Work with me Annie" (from the days when single entendre was still the norm in black music) and moving into a host of answer songs from various artists, including one as unlikely as Buddy Holly with "(Annie's been working on the) Midnight Shift". "Work with me Annie" actually kicks off this 58 song set comprising both sides of all the singles that Ballard recorded for the King record label from 1951 to 1959 which thankfully, appear in order of release. Plenty of other "Annie" songs are present - "Annie had a baby" (perhaps not surprising after all that midnight work!), "Annie's Aunt Fannie", and "Henry's got flat feet" (the answer to "Roll with me Henry").

But the real reason to recall Hank and the boys was the quality R&B they were solidly pumping out over these years. Unusually for a broadly doowop style group their default setting was medium to fast, twelve bar blues, and was aimed fairly and squarely at the dance floor. This, coupled with a tendency to often stick to the same key, could sound somewhat relentless and even get a tad boring but they throw in enough slower items to generally keep the interest level up. And those slower items, unlike, say the relatively light arrangements of songs that were coming out at the same time from Johnny Ace, very often have a socking great beat. The influence that Ballard had upon his peers and newer artists was considerable; James Brown is one who undoubtedly picked up a lot from the Ballard productions. Indeed as we move more into the later singles, the slower songs begin to sound more like the soul we know.

Hank Ballard's career will forever be viewed in the shadow of two facts 1)he wrote a song that launched the biggest post-war dance craze and 2)he's the reason we remember the name Chubby Checker. His golden decade started in 1953 fronting a vocal group who as was common in the 50's lost a front man to the draft. The 16 year old soon propelled his group to stardom, wrapping his sinuous tenor round a string of self-penned double-entendred dance singles that just don't seem to date. This CD set gives us the entire 50's Midnighters singles catalogue in chronological order ...that's 57 tracks as "Give It Up"featured on two singles(a year apart).Hank was signed to King records which along with Specialty were run by two of the mostest cigar-chompin' philistines around, but as is known, Nathan and Rupe's masters deliver some of the best sound quality of 50's indie labels. The effect here is a clean relentlessly poppy sheen to the songs which keeps them from getting boring even though most are "dancers".As with uptempo James Brown tracks of the period, the pinsharp hi-hat work and trebly guitar figures make even average songs sparkle. As with bluesman Jimmy Reed there was a deceptive simplicity and insiduous rhythm to the product that gave them crossover success with the early 60's party people. If your legs are still up to it,this stuff has bopability!
