Though chronologically it comes second in the series after DEAD MAN'S WALK, COMANCHE MOON completes the LONESOME DOVE quartet of epic Western novels. It continues the advntures of Texas Rangers Woodrow Call and Gus Macrae as they mature as men, now engaged in breaking Comanche resistance on the great southern plains of Texas.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pretty good prequel 19 April 2011
Format:Library Binding|Verified Purchase
OK, first off this is not quite as good as Lonesome Dove, but it's not bad either. It charts Gus and Call's rise through the ranks of the Rangers and the changing times they're living in. Once again there's emotion in every paragraph and McMurtry never shies away from the less savoury aspects of those who lived in the west, whatever their race. There's brutality, beauty, poignancy, humour and pathos from the first page right through to the last.

If I have any major complaint it's that the third part (the book's divided into three sections) feels a little too rushed and jumps too far ahead of the preceding section. For all that, it remains a fine and rewarding read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series 25 Sep 2013
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
As with the other books in the Lonesome Dove tale, its a great read, a true western. The four books together tell a truly memorable story of life in another era.

5.0 out of 5 stars Commanche Moon 18 May 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have just finished this book for the second time after first reading in 1994. The passing years have helped me enjoy it more this time as I appreciated a wider picture throughout the reading. What makes the book special is the authors ability to tell a story in every chapter which is evocative and connected with the bigger tale unfolding. It also presents the main characters in an excellent context at a different time in their existence enabling us to clearly picture the earlier development of people who would later be central to Lonesome Dove and Streets of Laredo. The mixture of humour violence and pathos is interwoven against a history portrayed inaccurately by many writers. McMurtery is a master at managing the pace of the book and the depictions of Call and McCrae could not be better scripted. A truly great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's good...but it's not Lonesome Dove 5 April 2014
By philp
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
The obvious problem with prequels is that you know what's coming later. Having prior knowledge of the fates of Gus, Blue Duck, Call et al, inevitably detracts from much of the potential tension in the narrative. Having said that it is still a ripping yarn, but the writing style is in some way more nave than in Lonesome Dove, which also lessened the overall impact of the book for me. Definitely rates one star less than LD.

Book as described and an excellent read. After watching Lonesome Dove for the third time the Mcmurty books fill a void.

really good book but suggest reading previous novels in series 1st to get the fullest enjoyment as characters enter and leave as it goes along & some have been killed off in earlier books but are referred to & mentioned in other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read. 13 Oct 2013

Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
Only the second western I have ever read in over 50 years of reading. Very unusual in the way it concentrates on the thoughts of people on both sides of the conflict. Disappointing though that an American author refers to a repeating rifle, before the Civil war as a Winchester when it was actually manufactured as a Henry until 1866.
