OK, first off this is not quite as good as Lonesome Dove, but it's not bad either. It charts Gus and Call's rise through the ranks of the Rangers and the changing times they're living in. Once again there's emotion in every paragraph and McMurtry never shies away from the less savoury aspects of those who lived in the west, whatever their race. There's brutality, beauty, poignancy, humour and pathos from the first page right through to the last.
If I have any major complaint it's that the third part (the book's divided into three sections) feels a little too rushed and jumps too far ahead of the preceding section. For all that, it remains a fine and rewarding read.

I have just finished this book for the second time after first reading in 1994. The passing years have helped me enjoy it more this time as I appreciated a wider picture throughout the reading. What makes the book special is the authors ability to tell a story in every chapter which is evocative and connected with the bigger tale unfolding. It also presents the main characters in an excellent context at a different time in their existence enabling us to clearly picture the earlier development of people who would later be central to Lonesome Dove and Streets of Laredo. The mixture of humour violence and pathos is interwoven against a history portrayed inaccurately by many writers. McMurtery is a master at managing the pace of the book and the depictions of Call and McCrae could not be better scripted. A truly great read.

"Lonesome Dove" was so well written, I wonder if the publisher/editor removed any graphic torture scenes, since there were none in that first epic story. This prequel, "Comanche Moon", and the sequels seem to be inadvisedly full of sadistic elements. I was most interested in the Call and Gus story, and so sickened by the drawn out torture scenes, I began to skim those sections, and eventually threw the book away. I didn't want my kids coming across it and having those nightmarish thoughts in their heads. The prejudicial treatment of native Americans was also distracting and dated. Their characters were amoral, and simple minded. Overall I was disappointed.
