5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense classic. 24 Nov 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This film has dated well and still has the power to keep the viewer in suspense. Genevieve Bujold gives a convincing performance as the lead,Susan. Michael Douglas also puts in a good showing. Another memorable performance comes from Elizabeth Ashley. I will not go into plot detail and spoil the fun,but can tell you that this is a top quality production. There are moments of terror that I had forgotten about since last seeing this. The settings are everyday places, but are filled with menace. The Jefferson Institute where the final scenes take place, perfectly evokes a sense of coldness and ruthlessness.
This movie is based on a novel, and has translated well to the screen. This is a classic of 70s cinema sci fi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coma 18 May 2005
At the end of the day a well made film will remain a well made film no matter how old it gets. This is certainly true of Coma, which is now 27 years old, but yet is still an awfully good thriller and can still keep the viewer on the edge of their seats.
In fact, the now dated sets and fashions add to the atmosphere of the film and are a great plus to setting of the opinions and prejudices of the day. We soon realise that it is not just the phantom deaths at the hospital that Dr Wheeler has to combat, but it is also the chauvinistic attitude of her male colleagues that she must fight to be taken seriously as a woman working in a man's world.
Genevieve Bujold is extremely good as the suspicious and conscientious Dr Wheeler. She plays the part with great sympathy and never attempts to make her character action-packed as so often happens when there is the need to play a strong female character. She remains feminine and gracious throughout the film and keeps the audiences favour and understanding at all times. Michael Douglas on the other hand is good but not outstanding, he fulfils the needs of his role as Wheeler's lover, Dr Bellows but you never quite believe he actually loves her. Richard Widmark is much better as the creepy Dr Harris, but when you discover it is he that is behind the dastardly plot it doesn't come as much of a surprise.
Other great bits about the film as the eerie and sinister sets, or rather how the film maker makes the normal hospital surroundings seems eerie and sinister. The setting of the Jefferson Institute is sublime though and you now wonder how the architects of the day came up with the plans for such a monstrous building!
The tension building throughout the film is superbly done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A REALLY GREAT THRILLER 27 Sep 2002
Format:VHS Tape
I saw this film many years ago when VHS/Betamax tapes were cool!! It's one of those medical thrilllers that will grab you in the opening scenes and keep you on the edge of your seat for its duration. In the story, patients undergoing routine surgery at a reputable hospital suddenly die on the operating table before being transferred to the Jefferson Institute where relatives are informed their loved ones are being cared for using sophisticated life support machines. As the plot thickens you discover that organs are being traded but who are the real perpetrators?

Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Coma is one of those films that make you use your brain,it is clever, smart and exciting. The blu-ray pq is a little grainy but it was made in 77 but still worth the purchase, there are a couple of great cameos from Tom(magnum)selleck and Ed harris with hair.Believe me coma is a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars great thriller with great acting 18 Feb 2014
By Sarah
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I watched this film many years ago and have always watched the repeats. however, I haven't seen a repeat of this for a long time so I thought I would treat myself to the DVD! This film is pacey, quite chilling with a great twist towards the end! I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good unpretentious thriller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Thriller From the 70s 11 Mar 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Coma is one of the movies I remember the most from my childhood. It used to be frequently on television, and I have had a certain memory about it for many years. I recently viewed the movie for the first time in at least 20 years, and it didn't feel at all like the memories that I cherished for it all those years ago.

However that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy Coma, because I did. Genevive Bujold is terrific as the nurse investigating dubious coma's and death around a respected hospital. Michael Douglas looks his best and is par great acting. However this is Bujold's movie make no mistake- Douglas is here, but he's much more of an supporting actor.

It was great to see the old character actor play killer- Lance Le Gault, and also Rip Torn and Tom Selleck play cameos.

The film does take time to fully get going, but the second half of Coma does not fail to entertain.

Coma in a nutshell is not as good as I remember it, but it's a decent adult thriller. Please ignore sub categories like science fiction. It's not here.
