Synopsis

One of the most famous detectives to ever hit the television screen, Columbo (Peter Falk) has become an iconic character in popular culture. Forever clad in a raincoat and chomping a cigar, the dishevelled Columbo seems as scatterbrained as his appearance would suggest. However, even when it appears that his investigation is going nowhere, Columbo's keen mind is absorbing details and clues, until finally he reveals that he knows everything that's happened. Each episode opens with a murder, followed by Columbo's investigation, and finally his revelation of how he put the events together. Columbo became popular and famous for its clever dramatic structure and Peter Falk's winning portrayal of the detective. This release includes the complete sixth and seventh series of the show.

5.0 out of 5 stars Columbo is a joy forever, 9 May 2007
By L O'connor (richmond, surrey United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This set contains some of the best episodes of Columbo, and as always the battle of wits between the detective and the murderer is a pleasure to watch. If not perhaps a thing of beauty, he is always a joy to watch.

In 'Fade in To Murder' Columbo has to solve a murder committed by an actor who just happens to be the star of a popular television detective series. The actor, splendidly played by William Shatner, is anxious to help Columbo solve the crime. In 'An Old-Fashioned Murder', a museum curatior murders her brother to stop him from selling off her beloved museum. In 'The Bye-Bye-sky-High I.Q. Club' the head of a society for people with very high I.Q>s quickly discovers that Columbo is smarter than he is.

In 'Try and Catch Me' Columbo is on the trail of a mystery writer (brilliantly played by Ruth Gordon) who murdered her niece's husband, believeing him to be responsible for her niece's death. 'How to Dial a Murder' contains perhaps the most fiendishly ingenious murder method ever devised in an episode of Columbo. 'Murder Under Glass' which features Louis Jordan as a blackmailing food critic who murders the chef who intends to expose him, is not an episode that should be viewed when hungry, as Columbo is offered delicious things to eat in just about every scene. However, whether you are hungry or not, this DVD set is bound to give you satisfaction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong Finish To The Seventies Series, But I Have My Reservations, 30 April 2007
By Jervis - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)

If series five of Columbo shows a degree of tinkering with the formula with occasional mixed results then series six and seven proves more in the vein of typical Columbo with less deviation and plot twists. Ultimately this is for the better because minus a couple of episodes, perhaps, these later couple of seventies series are right up there on par with some of the earlier Columbo series.

These stories are typical of Columbo yet there's enough variation in the plotting to make each of them stand alone as unique in their own right. For example, the motives for the killers actions vary greatly at times (eg. old lady blames son-in-law for niece's death in 'Try And Catch Me' and IRA sympathies result in another murder in 'The Conspirators').

There is a different feel, however, to many of these later Columbo stories with a change of producer and particuarly a change in the way Peter Falk portrays his role as Columbo. Personally i don't like his portrayal as much. However, it does foretell the style in which he would be played on his return in 1989.

These last two series from Columbo's original run are strong but they aren't without a few reservations on my part. Still worth buying though and better than practically anything on TV today (including the later Columbo's).

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent vintage detective television., 6 Mar 2009
By Mr. A. M. HOGG "MORS VINCIT OMNIA" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Columbo has always been my favourite TV detective. I usually prefer old school 'tecs since technology does so much of the work in later series. (For example, as much as I like the CSI's there's often too much tech.)

These final series of the original runs are indeed closer to earlier Columbos in format and for the most part benefit from that.

Hours of good television viewing and one of the few programs that my wife and I *both* universally agree on.
