As surprisingly enjoyable as it is forgettably silly, 24 Jun 2011
This review is from: Roy Colt & Winchester Jack [DVD] [1970] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
Roy Colt and Winchester Jack is the kind of paella Western that would probably be completely forgotten if it weren't for its director, and even among Mario Bava's fans it's not exactly highly regarded. Yet his 1970 spoof of treasure hunt westerns is as surprisingly enjoyable as it is forgettably silly, pitching its two constantly scrapping best friends against each other - one, Brett Halsey's Roy Colt, ostensibly on the side of the law and working for Giorgio Garguillo's crippled Sergio Leone lookalike, the other, Charles Southwood's Winchester Jack, reluctantly partnered with a defrocked Russian priest with bowel problems and a taste for dynamite (Teodoro Corra) - in the search for a buried fortune in gold. But this is more about subverting genre stereotypes for cheap laughs than storytelling, with Southwood saving Marilu Tolo's widow from a lynching (well, she is a self-made widow) only for her to force him to take a bath at gunpoint before keeping a running tab of how much he owes her every time they have sex, one evil hombre having a nervous twitch that makes him yelp like a coyote and an exotic shadow dancer in the Wimpy City brothel turning out to be a transvestite. High art it ain't, but it keeps moving fast enough, and Bava throws in the odd good visual gag, at one point even framing Southwood so that a cuckold's horns appear when he watches his best friend move in on his more than willing girl in one scene. Oh, and Piero Umiliani's funkily anachronistic score is fun as well. Neither Anchor Bay nor Image's NTSC DVD releases have any extras, both offering the subtitled Italian version.

Mario Bava over his career seemed to have carte blanche with the content of his films, no matter what the budget and although he mainly did giallo thrillers, he sometimes dabbled in comedy, sci-fi and a few spaghetti westerns, which was in vogue at the time. This film is quite entertaining and even silly sometimes, but I have an open mind when it comes to spaghetti westerns since most are quite revisionary to a degree....My only qualm is a minor one but I am sure others will mention it as well for good reason...this dvd does not have an optional English track, maybe it was never released here in the U.S. or any other English speaking countries, I can understand that, but it appears that Brett Halsey and Charles Southwood are speaking their lines in English and Marilu Tulo is as well or partly anyway. But again, a good portion of Bava's films that has been released on DVD has been in Italian only, just like this film and so far I believe this is the only spaghetti western released that has only an Italian track only with English Subtitles, however I can watch it either way and I believe the film is not a ripoff of Leone's or even Corbucci films but stands on its on legs. In closing if you are a Mario Bava fan it should be included in your collection and spaghetti western buffs ditto....
