Book Description

28 Nov 2011
Two boys, Colin Monro a Protestant and Tom O'Neill a Catholic, both born at the beginning of the Second World War become blood brothers in the innocence of childhood friendship. Both boys grow into men with the expectations of their communities, Colin becoming an Officer in the Parachute Regiment and Special Air Service, Tom a solicitor and a leader of the Provisional IRA. Through their eyes and those of their family and friends we experience the influence of a closed environment on the social history of a Province, which can lead to mans' inhumanity even to the people they love.

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read 2 Mar 2013
By Derek
Format:Paperback
Colours of Preudice is a compelling read. In one sense it is a "Northern Troubles" novel and in another sense it is a novel about two boys from different sides of the community who end up on opposite sides of Northern Ireland's long running and bloody conflict. The story, however, is much more than these sterotypes. It starts long before the Troubles began in 1969. It begins with the lives of two boys born in the early 1940's. They live in a country town and meet and become close friends. They are both from middle class families and grow up in the sleepy backwater that was Northern Ireland in the 1950's. The novel's great strength is the way that it charts how one of the boys becomes a soldier while the other becomes a senior IRA officer. Both roles happen almost accidently and mirror Northern Ireland's sleep walk into violence. I won't give anymore away but as you may guess the boys' paths cross. If you want an intelligent and exiting novel Colours of Prejudice is for you

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking Read 7 Jan 2013
By bazza59
Format:Paperback
Having lived in Northern Ireland during the period this book is set I was concerned that it might be too Holywood. I was very pleasantly surprised in that in my opinion it depicts the reality of the situation perfectly. Well written characters resonate through out with a compelling storyline. The author knows what he is talking about. HIGHLY recommended
