Product Description

CD Description

Finbar has already achieved legendary status as a folk icon to a whole generation and this recently recorded album, with its powerful mix of contemporary self written songs and intriguing, modern interpretations of classic Irish songs guarantees Finbar’s status as one of today’s greatest Irish performers and will instantly appeal to a new audience. Produced by Bill Shanley, one of Irelands foremost musicians, producers and arrangers who has worked closely with many artists over the years including Ray Davies, Mary Black, Paul Brady, Ronan Keating, Van Morrison and Sinead O’Connor, helps bring a new and unique edge to this album that reflects the many and diverse sides of Finbar Furey. New compositions include the evocative “After Sunday Mass”, “The ballad for George Best” and the autobiographical “Once when I was” - all delivered with Finbar’s distinctive voice of experience that cuts across all boundaries. The multi-million selling X-factor winner Shayne Ward duets on the heart-rending new ballad “Rivers of Steel” written by Finbar and sure to be a future classic. “Walking with my love” the duet with Mary Black and also written by Finbar, has already received major radio airplay on a national level and is also guaranteed to stand the test of time. This song was kindly donated by Finbar and Mary to support the launch of The Alzheimer Café in Ireland. Traditional Irish ballads such as “Dan O’Hara”, a song often sung by his Aunt Dolly is, in Finbar’s owns words, a beautiful old and proud song of famine loss and emigration and a gem in the crown of Irish heritage and folk history. Finbar has also recorded an innovative and definitive version of “Waltzing Matilda” especially to coincide with the Rugby World Cup. Finbars good friend and banjo mentor Derroll Adams introduced him to the music of Donovan in the late 60’s and one of the highlights of this album is the title track “Colours”. Finbar delivers a distinctive version of one of his heroes, Bob Dylan’s, “Blowin’ in the wind”. Also featured is an emotive rendition of “The Old Man” which was composed by Phil Coulter and dedicated to Ted Furey - Finbar’s father. This album represents a departure of sorts for Finbar from his early folk days to a more contemporary, raw and emotional style, determined, irresistibly intriguing and reflective and re-affirms his status as one of our great folk heroes.

I always enjoyed the Fureys singing the old traditional ballads etc but Finbarr has decided in his latter years to break away from all that and become a more folksy, soulful singer of lesser known and new songs......and I'm enjoying it as much as he evidently is!

All I can say about this CD is that I love listening to it. I like some of the Fureys' albums more than others. This is one of my favourites.
