One of the best albums I ever bought when I first went to college, these people went on to do "Pump up the Volume" as Marrs - and all the legal nightmare that followed that.
Fine tunes such as "Just give 'em whiskey" show how samples were going to start. "Say you" is one of the finest love songs ever written. "The moon is blue" is a fantastic anthem. "You keep my hanging on" is a superb cover of the motown classic.
A thoroughly seminal work if there ever was one - great for the lonely trip home on the train. Just listen to the richness of those sounds and get your Akai sampler ready to pick out those totally stealable bits. See where 80's music started going at the point of contact now lovingly recreated on CD!

In the eighties indie-label par excellence 4AD was more renowned for by turns gloomy /esoteric/ exotic bands so the debut full length album by Colourbox in 1985 stuck out like an orange spangle in a box full of mints. An unashamed pop album Colourbox is full of gargantous tunes, lavish hooks and a general opulent lust for life that would make other 4Ad bans like Xymox and The Wolfgang Press hyperventilate at the commerciality of it all. CAD 508 is the album's catalogue number, used to distinguish it from the earlier album of the same name. The first 10,000 copies of the vinyl LP came with a bonus LP MAD 509. I have the vinyl version alas without the bonus. Must have been a bit slow on the uptake that week The CD release here includes the first side of the bonus LP.
The band was formed by brothers Martyn and Steve Young, with guest singers until Lorita Grahame joined as a permanent member in 1983.Her lusty vocals are part of what makes this such a special album. The name of the group came about in 1982 when Martyn, Steven and Ian Robbins, with vocalist Debian Curry, had come up with a tape and needed a name to go with it. Flipping through a film book, they came up with the title of a 1937 animated film, a name which equally apply to a TV set or a paint box.
The music is heavily redolent of the eighties with it's spangled production values and huge bombastic sound. The band made good use of the electronic technology available at the time and where a good deal of the electronic music from that period hasn't dated very well Colourbox has , even though it does sound of it's time.
That's undoubtedly down to the songs .Single "The Moon Is Blue" is just a mighty brash powerful pop monster with a chorus that could eclipse its title subject.
