Foo Fighters - Back and Forth

Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
During the last dark days of Nirvana in 1994, tapes of Dave Grohl’s solo demos circulated among alt rock royalty — Greg Dulli commented positively about them in more than one place — but it never seemed that these home-made tapes would be the origin of one of the biggest modern rock bands of the post-grunge era. As it turns out, that’s exactly what Grohl’s Foo… Read more in Amazon's Foo Fighters Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour & the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There is even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars", whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will. --Rickey Wright

BBC Review

Originally released in 1997, The Colour And The Shape marked Foo Fighters' coming of age. The follow-up to 1995's self-titled debut, it marked the first appearance of a whole band rather than just Dave Grohl, who'd played pretty much everything on the first album himself. And while the goodwill and smart tunes saw it succeed, The Colour And The Shape sounds fuller and more dynamic, especially under the auspicious production skills of Gil (Pixies) Norton, it gave the first indication that Foo Fighters could easily surpass the heights - and step out of the shadow of - Dave's previous employers, Nirvana.

Originally meant as some loose concept album about the beginning and end of a relationship, Grohl's lyrics read in hindsight suggest a nice man tackling everyday issues, and who was laying his heart on the line. There is a sad undercurrent of loss and regret under some of the finest born-for-stadiums rock outs. The gentle strums of opener Doll offers a vulnerable moment before Monkey Wrench ignites and blasts off into orbit. Highlights such as powerhousing My Hero and the majestic Everlong rank among the band's classics and were the pathway to the band ultimately selling out Wembley for a couple of nights in 2008.

It's still, somewhat worryingly, their biggest selling album in America, where it was showered with nominations for VMAs and Grammys at the time. Over in the UK, it confirmed the beginnings of a beautiful relationship between the Foos and very large crowds.

The Colour And The Shape may have got somewhat lost in 1997's other significant albums, in what was a bit of a vintage year, however 12 years on, it sounds fresh as a singalong-in', lighters aloftin' metal-pop daisy. --Ian Wade

5.0 out of 5 stars Believe the hype!, 30 May 2004
Formed by former Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters initially came under a lot of pressure from critics out to prove that Grohl was just cashing in on his former band's success. As if they hadn't been proven wrong enough by the excellent debut, they were sure to be eating their words when 'The Colour and the Shape' was released.

Often considered to be the Foos' best, the album is a collection of delicious pop-rock classics, full of bounce and melody. Unlike most bands within the genre, Foo Fighters have a real feeling of originality and depth behind their song writing.

The songs are generally built around soft and delicate sections which burst into the punked up choruses. There are also slight metal overtones which add an extra weight to the songs. Some of the best examples of this can be seen in 'Monkey Wrench', 'Hey, Johnny Park!' and 'My Hero'. Then there are quieter ballad moments, such as 'Doll' and 'Walking After You'. However, the standout track, many would agree, is the dream-like 'Everlong' - it simply has to be heard.

In short, 'The Colour and the Shape' is an essential album with some of the best tunes and melodies you will ever hear. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What can i say..., 2 April 2001
This review is from: The Colour and the Shape (Audio CD)
I dont think 1,000 words is enough to describe the awsomeness of this album,so rather than babble on i'll try to be brief. After Dave Grohl leaving Nirvana he has moved on to bigger and much much better things. The lyrics are incredible and even if you're not a huge Foo fan you will be impressed. The contrast of music is amazing, with a slow ballad (Doll) opening the album and leading into the racy Monkey Wrench afterwards you will listen to the album with enthusiastic intent. My personal favourite on the album is Hey,Johny Park! and my only complaint is that there's not enough of that wonderfull guitar solo by Grohl. The vocals aby Dave are incredible, with the calm, tranquil chords on Doll and yet the hugely powerful screaming (not at all gratuitous) in Enough Space and Monkey Wrench.

This can easily be classed as one of the Foo's best albums and now with the extra tracks this album has just got better! It has some brilliant tracks, 'Monkey Wrench', 'My hero' and the anthem 'Everlong', which are all simply outstanding. The whole album is superb though, very uplifting and just great rock, perfect for those summer days out. This is a great place to start if you're new to the foo's and an excellent addition for any existing foo fans, a must have album!
