COLORADO TERRITORY 20 April 2011
By Dr. S. S. Nagi TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This movie was first released in 1949(2010) in B/W and full screen and runs 94 minutes. The picture and sound quality is good but the only extra is a cratchy trailer. The film starts with an elderly lady wanting to see her nephew, Wes Mcqueen(JOEL McCREA), who is in jail at the local sheriff. No Visitors , says the sheriff. But she says that it was Wes's birthday and she had come all the way from Kansas and if they could tell Wes about his white horse? Wes was locked up for robing 4 banks and for raiding the pacific Missouri Railroad in 1871. Wes escapes and meets Julianne(Dorothy Malone) and her father on a stagecoach. The stagecoach is chased by gunmen and Wes(calling himself Check Rogers) brings it to safety at the depot. There was $5,000 reward on Wes, dead or alive. He gets a horse and goes to 'CANYON OF DEATH' where the 'City of Moon' was made by Indians in a Rocky Mountain.
Then at the ruins of Toros Santos, he finds beautiful COLORADO (Virginia Mayo) with 2 men. They are planning a raid on the railroad at Aztec. Wes travels the Denver and Rio Grande train to see for himself. The payroll is on the train in its safe. The Marshall and his men are going to be on this train.
How will it end? Will Wes and others manage to steal the money? What can the Marshall do? Where will Wes and Colorado go with the money, if they succeed? Who would get the money eventually? What is the future for Wes, Colorado and Julianne?
This story by John Twist and Edmund North is beautifully directed in Master director RAOUL WALSH. Joel McCrea and Virginia Mayo give excellent performances.
JOEL ALBERT McCREA was born on 5.11.1905 in South Pasadena, california. After school, he acted on stage and took courses in drama. In 1927/28 he worked as extras and stunt men. He worked with his son - Jody, in some films. He married FRANCES DEE in 1933 and had 3 sons - David, Peter and Jody. McCrea was proud of his scottish heritage. Even in 1940's, he was a millionaire with land and real-estate dealings. He made his final appearance on 3.10.1990. On 20.10.1990, aged 84, he died in Woodland Hill, California, of pneumonia.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents "COLORADO TERRITORY" (1949) (94 min/B&W) -- Starring Joel McCrea, Virginia Mayo, Dorothy Malone, Henry Hull, John Archer & Morris Ankrum

Directed by Raoul Walsh

Outlaw Wes McQueen (Joel McCrea) breaks out of jail and meets up with his gang who are planning a train robbery. He finds them holed up in an old dilapidated Mission, arguing and one of them has a woman with him, a former dance hall girl, Colorado Carson (Virginia Mayo). Wes has decided that he wants to go straight. Having met Lulie Ann Winslow (Dorothy Malone) and her father Fred (Henry Hull), his ideal would be to settle down with her and own his own ranch. Out of loyalty to an old-time partner however, he agrees to go ahead with the train robbery and realizes too late that he is not destined to fulfill his dreams. He and Colorado make a final desperate break when the robbery goes bad.

Colorado Territory is acknowledged by many as a westernized remake of the 1941 crime drama High Sierra. Raoul Walsh, director of the earlier film, returns to helm the remake, doing a grand job on both occasions. Joel McCrea stars in the Humphrey Bogart role, playing a veteran outlaw who hopes to pull off one last, spectacular heist. Virginia Mayo portrays the Ida Lupino counterpart, a "bad" dance-hall girl who proves to be the only person who genuinely cares about McCrea's well-being. As in the earlier film, the climax finds McCrea making a futile bid for escape in the mountains, with tragic consequences.

A stupendous western film - McCrea is tailor made for this role - quietly spoken, well mannered bank robber - but trapped by his "fate". Fabulous cinematography (why didn't they film this in color?) and wonderful musical score by David Buttolph.

The teaming of McCrea with Virginia Mayo was to be repeated 8 years later on "The Tall Stranger" (1957)

VHS-quality - at best! 4 April 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This copy of the film is not a bit better than the cheaper one from Italy. They are both just as bad and worse than the copy I have from TCM broadcast of the film. In other words: EXTREMELY OVERPRIZED!
